I'm getting the truck into the paint shop tomorrow...getting rid of the silver stripe and going with an Autumn Red Effect color...sort of red/orange.
Here's the question, I'm going with black accents. Should I have the JEEP letters on the tailgate shot, or go with the stickers that you can get for them?
I've never used the stickers before, only had the letters painted.
What do y'all think?

I've had real good luck with vinyl stick on letters. Most car factories use that now too. Unless you know a really good painter you can trust that will do the job for a reasonable price, I'd go with the stick on letters.

Paint is correct.
I think the factory used a hard nap roller to paint the tailgate JEEP letters.
No masking.
U know we're going to want pics before, during and after.;)

X2 As much as I hate working with decals the vynil lettering will be much easier to do. Not saying that it can't be done just that the person doing it needs a good Valuim before attempting to paint them. :D

Isn't there someone on here that makes the letters? I looked in Vendors a bit but no luck...

Great question dlowrance......
As a follow-on question, is there a source for template lettering that can be stuck on, painted, and peeled off? For example, a sheet of vinyl with the letters cut out of it, that can be peeled off after the paint is sprayed?

I'm waffling on this situation also. While my Jtruck won't be period correct when it's all said and done, Certain things I'd like to have at least as-factory. More than likely, I'll try my hand at a tight nap roller, and if that doesn't come out good enough, I'll get the vinyl graphics.
I've half thought about getting my hands on some of form of reflective/phosphorous paint for the "JEEP" letters on the tailgate.

I have the letters for the tailgates for $15.00/set. I can make them in any color.
I can also cut them as a paint stencil if you'd like.
Long&Low- I can do them with reflective vinyl too, but they're $30.00/set (the reflective material is a lot more expensive).

We'll have to talk about that. Did you get my PM with respect to some Cherokee motif stripes for the Jtruck?

I love the look of the reflective scotchlite, it looks sooo cool when headlights hit it...

One of my buddies did one that looked really nice. He put the tailgate on a flat, level surface and put water in it up to the point he wanted to paint the letters then sprayed his color over that-- very carefully--, drained the water, sprayed his clear on the whole tailgate, it turned out really nice. If I would try this, it would probably spray water over everything.
On the flip side, you could paint the area of the letters first and then mask them with the vinyl stickers and then paint the body color, remove the vinyl so some light sanding, put some clear on and be done as well.

Not to hijack but have a tailgate Q. My gate is pretty bulged. I would like to paint it up soon but is there any way to flatten them back out?

I was thinking about doing the letters in red, or white and the recessed area in either black or red.

Do you have that material that looks black until lights hit it at night then it's reflective?
(see reflective color chart at the bottom of this page: http://www.streetglo.net/streetglo_files/helmet.flame.decal.htm )

The factory both painted and used stick on vinyl.
I think BJ's also sells letters.

Yep, I do have black reflective. It's just like that chart shows; it's black but reflects as white.

I was about to second guess myself cause I could of swore mine was stickers before I had the truck painted and new stickers put on the tailgate. Also not sure how to do the whole quote thing so don't yell at me.:banghead:

Box it up and ship it to a friend via Greyhound. By the time you get it back the bus should have ran over it several times eliminating any buldges. Trust me I know from experience.
