Hi all.. looking at some of the online VIN decoders, I have come up with the following for my '78 Cherokee. Does it look right for mine? I was told it was a 360, but the VIN seems to indicate a 401 (which would be kinda cool).

J8A17NZxxxxxx

Jeep Corporation
1978
Toledo, Automatic, Left Hand Drive
Cherokee Chief, 2 door, wide track, 109" wheelbase (it has an "S" emblem on the dash)
6200# GVW
V8, 401 CID, 4 Bbl

Thanks!

Is there an easy way (ie, one I can do while it's currently 10 degrees out) to verify the engine by looking at it?

Crawl underneath and look at the engine block underneath the motor mount brackets. The displacement number is on both sides of the block.

Look at the air cleaner. If it's the original air cleaner there will be a yellow sticker on the driver side that says 401. Like Flint said the only real way to tell is to get underneath.

Cool... thanks guys. It is a replacement edelbrock carb, so the air cleaner is not the original. Looks like I get to get a little dirty in the cold tonight. :D

Well according to my favorite resource http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/vin78.html
A "Z" code engine is a 401. (assuming it has not been yanked at some point)
