This one is to help a friend out, he has a j4000 with a chevy 327, TH350, NP 203, on chevy D44 front and corporate 12-bolt rear. It just ate up the diff carrier on the D44, i checked the gears are both 3.73. Before, it acted like it had mis-matched gearing. The 203 has what seems to be like a spool, that replaces the diferential in the 203. in addition to not allowing it to go into low-lock, this also makes it effectively locked all the time. I need to know if the chain drive turns the front faster than the rear. a tooth count on the chain drive gears would help too, so i can try to match gears when i put in a different front end.

no,the front is not over driven.a 203 that is properly converted will give you positions for 2hi,2lo,n,4hi,and 4lo. you should still be able to get the 203 into all of its original positions. if its stuck in 4hi,id pull the xfer and disassemble for inspection.prolly ate the font diff cause of teh binding caused by locked 4wd on pavement.im assuming it still has the drive flanges, instead of manual hubs? if you cannot make the xfer come out of locked 4wd,id at least add manual hubs so that there wont be anymore binding while running around on the street.

match the gears when putting in a different front end? not sure what you mean here. there are not really any different gears that you can put into the 203.all you need to do is match the front and rear ratios, and run the same size tires.

hope this helps.
