Ok, I have read many posts, but I need to ask more about rebuild kits for the 360. I have an 84/85' 360 I am rebuilding, and wanted to hear opinions on different kits, ie: Cost, quality, what to look for, etc. The motor is in great shape, but I have an extra and want to build it with good parts. What are everyone's experiences with different brands? I plan on doing the oil mod to the #4 & #5 cylinders, edelbrock 1406 & intake, 3 angle valve grind, and quality gaskets. I'm wondering about rods / pistons / rings / bearings / rockers (roller or no?) / valves, etc.....
TIA.

i'd like to here about the 4/5 modification. new to me!
It's been a few years since I bought a kit but P.A.W. used to sell quality kits. Just make sure everything in the kit is brand name USA parts...no Taiwanse/China/Mexico/Philippine stuff.

On-its-side, the modification has been discussed on the FSJ list. Here is the post, the guys email, and the FSJ list info.

Sirs;
AMC's have to pressurize the driver's side oil galley and lifters
first, then the passenger's side galley, lifters and cam bearings and
last, the mains and rods. I don't know how long the system takes
to fill and pressurize at start-up or how much of a pressure drop
occurs across the above mess but our motors are notorious for
oil-starving the rear main. And hot?
There's a lot of argument about it but I looked at (2) 360's and
my 401 and all showed the same oil-starved crank wear pattern:
the rear main was heavily worn and the wear got better and bet-
ter towards the front. American Performance in Florida makes a
rear main oil bypass kit using brass fittings and copper tubing for
about $25 that's supposed to solve the problem, but I don't like
the way it flowed so we made one up out of 1/4" ID steel tubing
and better fittings. It flows noticeably better so we took several
pictures, wrote much better instructions and the same is now
available thru the shop at the below address for $19.95 + tax.
Sent a picture to Lindel but it wasn't very good and since then
we've upgraded the kit so this weekend I'll be taking newer
pictures and the ones in the kit will be much better.
Argue all you want, at the very least this by-pass line helps
balance the oil supply to the rods and mains. It's installed on the
the 401 we're building and I strongly recommend it to anyone
doing a 304, 360, 390 or 401 AMC.
