The newest addition to the jeep yard got dropped off at Sam's Offroad here in Tulsa for some minor surgery. A nice fresh TBI 350 with a 700r-4 and Dana 300 will find its' way into the engine bay some time later today. As much as I loved the lope and rumble of the 360, the TH400 had a tendency to puke fluid from who knows where and the quadra-trac just isn't my cup of tea.

Looking forward to this becoming my "new" daily driver. It sure gets lots of attention (especially the texas longhorn sticker that I still have up in the window)!

35" BFG MT's are going on as well. We are thinking of renaming PESO to MTPKET (Empty Pocket)!

I want to thank Janie and familty for contributing to my jeep habit. The greatest thing is that a jeep is the best therapy for a bad day!

Luckily I live just outside of the city limits. My neighbors are used to my other jeeps and me launching when I pull out onto the street. There has been many mornings (4am heading to work) where I would only idle out to the highway. Just got to love a single chamber flow master flowing through 3" exhaust! Nice and free.

I will post it up some photos monday. Should have it back in my garage for wiring and plumbing by wednesday and hopefully doing a 35" BFG burnout by saturday!

So you have a QT for sale? huh?

You come and get it. I can't vouch for how well it works relative to an un-working or perfectly working QT (I'm a D300 kinda guy and these QT's are new to me) but it drives and goes into low range and the front hooks up. If you want it, let me know and you can have it...yes...free...just come and get it. If you are interested in the rest of the drive train, let me know. We can discuss options.

I have Sam's Offroad putting the engine/tranny/x-case in since my engine hoist doesn't lift high enough. I'll bring it home and finish the wiring, fuel plumbing, and exhaust. i'll have to re-work the driveshafts and maybe the radiator. nothing too hard. i've done several dozen into CJ's and YJ's. Funny thing is having most of the little parts saved up in little boxes all over the place. looking forward to cleaning up the garage afterwards.

man, ice storm blowing, wind blown frost on hanger downers, no mercy! just talked to sam's. They should have it out out tomorrow. then i can swing by for some photos and throw some paint on the inner fenders and fire wall. The engine will be in from the machine shop tomorrow as well after getting a little re-freshing of bearings and seals and a valve job.

But, while you wait through intermission, here's a photo from the wife's jeep build....

i was probably the 8th person to bust on it....lots of axle shafts. mine was an output on the d300. it's not too tall but pretty steep. i had to back down and i wish we had that on video! I thought it was going over a few times in the couple of seconds it took to back off of it.

The D300 goes in today and then it's coming home. Got wiring and plumbing to finish up. The flowmaster exhaust i took off my CJ-8 is going into the truck. Maybe this weekend it will fire up!

Got the shifter cable from flaming river, driveshafts are getting cut this week, and the radiator will have the necks moved.

I think I'm changing the name to EMPTPKT!

Seems like it sits pretty low in there, do you need that much hood clearance? If not I think I'd rather have the ground clearance, but maybe that's what it took to fit...

okjeep
03-02-2009, 09:48 AM
It does sit a bit low but almost the same location as the 360. I like having the room around the back of the block, unlike the CJ/YJ. For what I will use this truck for, it has plenty of clearance. The cross member sits a bit lower then I envisioned but it's only the start. Plus I prefer to have a bushing mount where it ties to the frame. The bolted connections tend to be noisy.

really not sure why ANYONE would want to swap in a whimpy 190HP tbi 350 and NOT atleast change the heads, those are weak engines, I took the one out of my 89 caprice and installed a 95 lt1 , never would i have another set of swirl port heads. and a flowmaster might sound free flowing, but its not, acually one of the worst aftermarket mufflers out there far as making power.

okjeep
03-02-2009, 12:07 PM
It does look low but also small in the engine compartment. There's enough room for a nice wide ramjet 502...just not enough room in the wallet! I got the york/sanden combination AC compressors ready to go in to allow ac and oba. I ran this set up in my CJ and it was tight. Lots of room here. This truck will be more of a fun/recovery type truck.

I prefer the simplicity of the TBI. It will have plenty of power for this truck. Like I said in a previous post, I have two other jeeps with all the power necessary. The programming on the 1227 computer is very limited with changes. I have been down that VERY expensive road on my CJ. I'm pushing around 400hp and it cost me a lot of time and money....and now front axle shafts...

And for an LT1, why add one as complicated as that? Just step up to the LS engines. Much more reliable. The optispark on the LT engines never panned out for Jeeps. Too troublesome.

And exhaust? to each his own I say....running 2 chamber in 2-1/2" exhaust isn't very restrictive and works for me.

wow, those pictures look so familiar!! keep up the good work.

i would also suggest moving the engine and trans up if you can. i don't see why you couldn't... my setup looks like it sits higher then that and i have a 2" body lift just to clear the 465 and keep a flat belly. here is a pic of mine: 1 (http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/87/l_8a82edcbac647015801477a81b24df07.jpg), 2 (http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/75/l_b68408f51206184eb9f4633a4a31e396.jpg).

um, not every TBI was 190hp. not that HP even matters, its all about torque! and TBI motors have a torque curve right off idle that is very good.

and if you want to bash them for their 'low' power output, have you ever looked at the amc 360 numbers? you get more power out of some stock TBI 350s then the 401.

Al

ironroad29
03-02-2009, 02:59 PM
TBI is fine, for what it is it works great, LT1 swap isn't that much harder, basicly the same hookup as the tbi engine, the tbi engine heads are what sucks, they fall right on there face at 4,500 , and no TBI engine was ever rated at greater than 210 and i think that was fudging some, you get yours from a truck or car? the cars got the roller cam atleast where as most of the truck LO5's got the flat tappet. Best mod i ever did to a old LO5 was install aset of big valve 305 heads on it and get a chip from TBIchips.com , a set of long tubes, and true duals..
made 206 rwhp. so it was close to knocking on the lt1 stock power.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v189/ironroad9c1/caprices/P1010328.jpg
and plenty of torque , also I think I installad stock lt1 b body cam, that really helps the low end.

I finally got a chance to get all the jeeps in one place at one time.
The '71 is all cleaned up and rfeady for its journey to Indiana next weekend. The new owner is driving it back and will have a cab of another j-truck in the back!

The '79 is lacking the installation of the EFI harness and it's ready to go to the paint shop..

The wife's '88 YJ jeep, well, it's a poser that I don't get to wheel but do get to drive around town. It's ready for colorado in 4 weeks. Will be towing our M416 Trailer with all the camping/fishing gear.

Then my '80 jeep cj7/8. Had a promising hit on it last week on ebay but timing was a bit off and the prospective buyer wanted to wait a bit more. I got it out today and hit the car wash. Sure was nice to drive it. Kinda fits like a glove!

Yup, still sitting where you parked it. I will move it over the weekend once I get the neighbors tractor. The auto carrier company would not allow the extra cab in the bed of the '71.

The good news is that I can use it to figure out how to make (hopefully) a jeep TJ heat/AC unit work in a J-truck.

I was also thinking of bolting some seats in it and hanging it from one of the trees in the back and use it as a swing to watch the horses in the back pasture.

Ultimately, there's no rush on moving it so when it works out for a trip north, it will be ready.

I had it planned to have things ready for you if you were driving and since you had a shipping company picking it up, I decided to get it to Sam's Offroad. I had the truck scheduled to go to Sam's Offroad for the remaining repairs (tuesday) for the final items to be corrected. Unfortunately the delivery company showed up much quicker than I anticipated!! Called monday night and loaded it up tuesday am.

I will have a check in the mail to you for the items that I was going to have them correct. I have the steering box replaced now . I put in all new u-joints. I am currently getting the water out of the fuel tank. I runs pretty good, tho. mr haney

I have to appologize to Mr Haney here. I promised to send him the funds that I budgeted to get the truck ready for him to drive back to indiana and hadn't yet. Worse that it's been 2 months! I appreciate his patience and hope that he will accept my appology.

Mr Haney, the box with the '71 repair manual and the $200 will be shipped to you via fedex within the day.

Janie, thanks for the photo. Can you shoot a couple with the backside open? Also, the rear slider window, factory option? aftermarket?

We are anxious. Once it fires, I can get it to paint and body for some a new two tone paint scheme.

Anyone where ever use a suburban fuel tank in the J-truck or wagon?

Hey, were you trying to reach me? I think it was you, looking for some parts, but your email address wasn't updated in the forum here so I couldn't reply. LMK, maybe it was someone else in OK...

***Edit, sorry it was JeepFreak that I was unable to get back to....

If you could make a 24 hour day into 36 I might have time. Work and side work has been rocking this year. Got to ride the wave while you can!

I have some friends coming over this weekend for a Jeep blast if we don't get rained out.

Worked a bit last weekend and then in Minnesota for the last week. Got home friday and slept. Worked on the wife's YJ finishing up an Autometer gauge swap. Total pain in the backside to make it look right.

I am taking a few days off the end of this week to make some headway.

Down to mounting the exhaust, tieing in the jeep and engine harness, fuel pump and lines....and crank it up!

Picked up the springs for the front spring over and got a front D60 ready in the wings for Gilmer in March!

Peso is finally going to the exhaust shop after a short visit to Sam's Offroad for the spring over on the front axle and to tidy up a few loose ends that I just don't have time to finish.

Should be done by early next week!

Then it will be off to the body shop for some new paint and panel repairs.

Janie, we finally did tag the truck! took a year but since it's been sitting....

Then you must have discovered, as I did, that the great state of Oklahoma increased the fine from 25 cents/day up to a max of $25 to 1.00/day max of $100....bloodsuckers :grumble:

It wasn't pretty. but now that it's tagged and if it starts tomorrow....

down to fixing a fuel leak and installing the exhaust. took the exhaust off my stretched jeep. it terminates just ahead of the fuel tank on the driver side. it will be a nice low flow master rumble. when it was on my cj, it would vibrate the photos on the wall in the our kitchen.

will post up if all goes well.

Well it's coming along. way slow but work keeps getting in the way. Lots of traveling around the country and long work hours. While the truck has been sitting at Sam's Offroad, it's getting the details cleaned up, new braided stainless fuel hoses, transmission hoses, wiring, camero radiator/dual electric fans, etc....and a new 14b was just acquired, 4:10/detroit. Just sourced some disc brakes. I found a D60 that will be installed about time it's ready for the body shop. The TBI 350 is running nicely and may have a line on a 383...

Final decision is 37's or 38's? With the spring over with chevy springs, will have to do some trimming but want to maintain the flare. Might have to do so creative sheet metal work.

shooting to wrap up for the fsj run in july.

That's awesome Jody. Really looking forward to seeing some pic's. You've taken this truck to a whole new level. My vote on tires would be 37's. Please let me know when the SJ springs will be ready to head south.
