why oh why did they change the dash in the end run gwags? what a POS. i replaced the headlight switch on my 88 this pm. a few months ago i had the bezel off to switch out the radio. the surround just pries out/snaps in. i didnt have any trouble with the instrument panel either.not after i figured out the right route to the speedo cable nut. next came the switch.thats when the fun began. i couldnt figure out
how the thing was mounted. the hls and the pnl light dimmer are ganged together with this plastic widget. the switch itself is held into the dash by a prong top and bottom that engages a spring plastic tab. what do you guess happened to that 14yr old plasic tab? yup. i cleaned the top one right off. without it, using the switch just pushed it into the dash. i fixed with my latest favorite securing method. 12 ply waxed lashing cord. i use it at work for cable management instead of cable ties. phone cos dont like ty-raps cuz they are expensive, ugly and sharp. lashing is cheap, easy to make neat and safe, strong and extremely versatile. it took me 10 minutes to get a good bight on the back of the switch. i looped the cord in front of the dash where the surround will make the repair invisible. secure, the lights work 1st time every time. they even passed the #2 son test. he is pleased, because it is usually after dark when he runs the rubbish barrels to the road. this is the 5th instance of stuff that never broke on my AMC wags failing prematurely on my cryco wag. i think my next fsj will be an 83 or older.(83 is emissions exempt in MA)
