thanks for the answers to my last question...<hood stuck shut> i got it open....rear hatch still stuck key doesnt unlock it anymore.....

after fixing these problems i encountered another.....driving at slow speed i hear a clanging coming from left front wheel
the universal joint is gone.....but the axle is loose.....where it goes into the trany i can move it up and down ...is this normal while in 2 wheel drive?

I'm not familiar enough with the little XJ's 4WD system to even guess. There are a few XJ owners here that might be able to help but since this forum is for FSJ's(Full-Size Jeeps) you might get better or quicker answers from one of the web forms specifically catering to your type Jeep. Do a search for Jeep Unlimited's forum url. They specialize in the small Jeeps. Good luck.

You should not be able to move the front driveshaft or the axle-shafts at all.
