View Full Version : Accellerator sticking

My accellerator has gotten into the habit of not returning to idle unless I tap on it to get it to drop down. It tends to hang up at 1500 rpm. Lately its gotten to the point its annoying.

After checking it out, its apparent the throttle return spring does not have enough tension to pull the throttle closed against the friction in the accellerator cable. Also, I noticed that with the return spring removed the throttle stays in whatever position you push it to. I.e., the throttle shaft springs on the carb will not close the throttle against the accellerator cable friction. So I popped of the cable end and the carb throttle shaft springs seem fine.

So I guess, I have either a weak return spring or an accellerator cable with to much friction or both. Anyone know if replacement throttle return springs and accellerator cables are available? I know generic stuff is available, but I rather just get something that drops in.

If that 25 year old return spring were to break, the engine would race. Could get real exciting if it happened in traffic!!! Particularly if someone else is driving and doesn't have the presence of mind to slap it into nuetral . . . or worse slapped it into reverse or park.

What kind of carb? And do you have one return spring or two? I think I actually have two on the accelerator...

Mine had started to do that for a little bit. Turns out that the linkage was a little gummed up around the joints. A little WD-40 and everything was fine

I have a Motorcraft 4350. I was thinking about the single return spring. A single spring seems like a big safety hazard. Spring breaks-engine races-people get hurt. Seems like AMC would have used two springs. Either two return springs on the carb throttle lever or maybe a second spring on the accellerator pedal under the dash or something.

the accellerator cable is starting to frey inside the cable housing you need to replace the cable unhook the cable from the carb and slide it with your hand

my jeep when new (to me) had the throttle sticking problem....sprayed some WD-40 into the accel. cable housing....helped a little. Put a new throttle return spring on from Discount....helped a little more, but i still had to physically pull the gas pedal out with the toe of my shoe to get it to idle....
when i got my carb rebuilt, the mechanic put 2 springs on the throttle return, said the Motorcraft (ford) carbs are supposed to have 2 springs....one is a big fat blue one and the other is a little green one inside the big blue spring....(looks pretty cool IMHO)....BTW my carb is a 2150....
good luck smile.gif

good luck smile.gif I like the dual spring idea. I have one large spring, should be easy enough to fit a smaller spring inside.

Do you know your carb guy got the colored springs from?
