View Full Version : Trimming my fenders

Well I finally decided to go ahead with a rear fender trim. I'm starting with the rear passenger side in which I masked 1 inch above the current fender lip and then went to town with my cut-off wheel. I'm guessing this was the easy part... I'm still going to cut 1/2 inch relief cuts every 2 inches so I can fold the fender lip up so I have no sharp edges but that will wait till tomorrow. You're probably wondering why I'm doing this since my current tires clear just fine. . Well all this madness is due to me picking up a set of 255/85R16 Mud Rovers on some rough 16x8 white steelies. They have about 75% tread,no rot or major defects and only minor rust spots on the wheels. Good find at only 60 bucks. The only thing is that they are a good inch taller than my 33's and barely fit in my wheel well so that is why I decided to trim. Also gives me more room if I decide to run a bigger lift and tires in the future. I'm going dismounted the tires to ''verify'' there are plugs or patches and I'm also going to prep the wheels for paint. I plan on using some black rattle can truck bed coating on the wheels which I've tried on one of my other project's wheels (K5) with great success. Here are some pics of the wheels & tires I scored and some pics of the fender trimming process. Let me know if you have any useful tips with this fender trim modification. Here is the link that helped me decide on how to go about doing this mod. http://www.cfsja.org/tech/exterior/fender/fender.html

Got to work on it today for a couple of hours. Added the finishing touches to the fender. Banged out all the folds evenly, grinded down sharp edges/points and prep'd the surrounding area around the lip for paint. Some of the paint around the new lip chipped and cracked but I gave it a light sand to try to even it out and it came out good. Was going for the fender flare ''look'' and I have to say I sorta like it. I originally sprayed it with Marlhyde rubberized undercoating (flexible) but didn't like the look so I took it off and sprayed it with regular black paiint for now. I plan on spraying it tomorrow (hopefully if time permits) with some truck bed liner (will fill in imperfections in paint) since I'm already going to spray my white steelies with it. I am very satisfied with the results and love the extra room I got now. All in all I think if I dedicated straight work time it would be somewhere around 2 hours per side from prep to dry paint. Here's some more pics.

The only rubbing i have been having is in the front fenders going around tight turns. it hasn't been bad enough to really make me grab the sawzall but I think the truck on the website with the fenders looks BA. Everyone keeps telling me 33's are too small for that but the one they got pictured is on 33's and I think it looks awesome

The front of mine has plenty of room (did flex tests with a jack and some tires) but the rear would probably end up shaving some lugs off with the rubbing. Not a big fan of fender flares but I needed to fix the blemished paint (cracked/chipped from cutting, bending and banging) from around the new fender lips. If I find some black cherry paint tomorrow I'll probably go ahead and remove the black and paint it the same as the rest of the rig. This will do for now and prevent any rust from forming till I decide what to leave on permanantly.

Here's some pics of the finished product. Finished the drivers side yesterday but couldn't post pics (dinner and movie with my other half). The spray on bed liner takes long to cure and some came up when removing the tape but I touched it up pretty easily. Let me know what you think and if I should stick with the black bed liner stuff or try and match the paint.
