Another task on ye ole list of terrible deeds to perform. Time to fix the exhaust y-pipe. I should be driving a jeep, instead i'm driving a farmall :/ Question is: one of the flange bolts is broken off, and the other is bent so bad i can't get it back in shape to get the flange back on. Is it possible to drill these out with the manifold back in? Or will i just tick myself off for 18 hours, and end up taking the manifold off anyways?

Its probably possible, but I wouldn't even think of trying it. I think you'd end up messing around with it for at least 18 hours and then end up taking it off anyway ;) :D

I've learned when messing with my exhaust that the easiest way is also the longest possible way I could do it. In other words no short cuts.
Good Luck,

I have successfully drilled and retapped 3 of the 4 flange bolts with the the manifolds insitu.
It took an hour or so and required some patience.
Tips. grind the existing studs flush to the flange to allow you to centerpunch them.
Use a pilot drill and then the correct just undersize bit.
Part of my success was probably due to having sharp bits and a good high quality non-dull Tap.

10 bucks is pretty cheap, but I'd still rather do it myself. I've gotten pretty good at it :D As mentioned above, having good, sharp drill bits and a good tap make it much easier... It should only take a few minutes to get the manifold out (if the bolts come out), then you won't have to lay on your back and drill smile.gif
