Two years after I bought the Cherokee it finally passed Ca emissions. I now have a registered street legal jeep. I am so glad that headache is now gone and I can drive it somewhere besides around the block to my brother inlaws and sisters house.

The biggest thing was on the visual and the routing of the vacuum lines putting an original air cleaner and catalytic converter.
The PO had a 4 barrel Edelbrock on there and I thought I was going to have to change that out, but friend of mine told me where to go and they will ignore that as long as I had all of the smog equipment hooked up and it passed emissions of course.
The guy said it actually ran very clean and passed with flying colors.

Congrats:thumbsup: . Perserverence pays off. Hopefully you have the same luck two years from now. I think the goal of the state is to get old iron off the road at any cost. Truth be told, People that are into classic cars have enough love for their vehicles to keep their engines running in tip top shape. No surprise that your Jeep passed with flying colors. I'm sure even without the required equiptment that most of these vintage machines would pass pollution regulation just as clean if not cleaner than a lot of vehicles on the road.

Ya I know what you mean California is not easy to get an old car legal every two years. The funny part was when I took it6 in I didn't think it was going to pass because it was running so well.

I had to get the new 88 past roller smog in MA. It was a major PITA. Every durn smog widget had to be working. Major new parts consisted of a new cat and EGR. Amazingly, once it was set up, the engine burned very clean. Best yet, 4 yrs later, MA changed to smogging only 96 and up cars with OBDII ports. No more smog tests :D

Yes that would have been great if the 79 wasn't such a good deal at the time.

hey, nice work, my waggy passed last may. the smog guy really didn't know what to look for on this old beast (76). I take it that you have an edelbrock intake. dose it have the EGR on it? I want to change my intake an get rid of the old Motorcrap carberator.
do you know what timing you used?

My 79 wag passed the tx. smog tests 3 years in a row with no smog equipment on it and they allways asked if it was efi. it was stock 2bbl. with a good tune up. now in oklahoma no need to test.

I have an edelbrock carb but with a four barrel intake not edelbrock. I dont know what the timing is. I didn't plan to take it in on friday but when my chevy bit the dust that morning I had no choice I just hoped it passed. I didn't have time to set the timing or even check I just hoped it was goood enough to run and pass. All I did that day was adjust the carb and put in 91 octane and drive to the smog shop. And it worked ahhhhh relief so good.
