was/is all shift linkage connected at column and trans?
any odd noises, like hydro pump,or screches?
what trans ya running?th400? what transfer case ya got?
well that outa get us started
oh..you said trans is out, have you pulled things apart?

Thanks, fluid ok, would'nt go into any gear, not sure on shif linkage.I didn't do yhe work my self,no noise, I think it's a 400, transfer case no idea, have taken the tans apart now I gota figure out how to put it back together doesn't seem to be trans problem. I haven't heard of these trans having problems?

shift linkage would be the first thing i would check. have somebody move the shifter while you crawl underneeth the jeep.should be a couple rods on the drivers side.when the shift lever is moved they should move.
for it to be the trans with no engagement it would probably have to be the pump, tourque converter, forward clutch or manual shift valve.but it could also be one of a million things in the valve body, but unlikely. smile.gif
there are also alot of members from north carolina,i'm sure they will chime in here soon with an offer of assistance. ;)

When you say the lever slides throught the selsections, did it feel funny, or any different. Are yousure it's the transmission and not the transfer case slipped into nuetral??

Woooaa,,i dont wanna be calling anybody an idiot.all i am saying is check everything that could affect gear engagement outside of the trans.
the number one rule for transmissions is dont pull em out until you have ruled everything else out,and have a pretty d%mn good idea what is bad in the trans.dont get to excited yet,by tommorow more members will chime in with some other ideas.

A stock 78 would have a TH400 (Good trans if taken care of) The
transfercase would be a Borg Warner 13?? we all call it a quadra-trac.
If you have it out and apart, buy a rebuild video, a tech manual and a
rebuild kit, clean the heck out of everything (even paper towel lint is bad)
Watch the video read the book and buy the tools need to compress the
various spings needed to assemble it. or just farm it out to a good shop
that will warenty it. (Did the tranfercase get put in newtral ?)
Mike D. (I think I would do a lot more debug work before pulling it apart)

The shifter slides freely, have no ideas, but the guy working on it was out of ideas, he is no longer working on it.
If the rig has the HI/LO range option ya didn't bump the x-case shifter into neutral did ya? Just a thought...

One thing about these rigs is something is always needing attention. For me, if it is bolt off, bolt on, I give it a shot. When it comes to the stuff you are dealing with, I'm over my head. That's when I get someone who really knows their stuff to give me a hand or time to take it to a shop.
I'd try and get that tranny back in the jeep and run down all the other suggestions above. If that fails, it may be time to find a reliable transmission shop.
Good luck! smile.gif

Ok guy's I decided to take the trans to a shop have it rebulit while it's out and then start from scratch on what's wrong. Thanks so much. In Asheville, have some parts not what your looking for, I don't think doors, seats, other. Someday my Jeep will be right I don't care what it takes.

Sounds like you had the T case in Neutral, all right.

I just hope I put the trans back in and it will work, but I have a feeling it won't and I don't know why.

My first guess would be the xfercase lever...I have hit it with my foot by accident and moved it...Regards

A technical service manual is invaluable. Might want to look in to getting one. They don't come cheap but one project will more than pay for it. A worthwhile investment if you want to hang on to your rig for a while.

Yup...could be the t-case got bumped into neutral when you stepped out of the Jeep. I've hit the lever with my foot before...that is of course if the Jeep is a Quadratrac with low range shifter next to front edge of the seat. That would be the very FIRST thing I would check. If nothing else, grab it and cycle it and try again...if grinding/whiring noise, turn off the ignition immediately and then shift the lever again.
Holy old thread, batman! I don't even think many of those posters are here anymore. :)
Actually, I just checked out of curiosity, only Joe is still here!
Good advice, though, it's happened to me before.
