View Full Version : aux fuel tank.. diversions and connections

I thought some of us FSJer's might have some suggestions concerning adding a additional Auxiliary fuel tank. Tank will go in the usual
location rear between the frame rails. Spare tire will have to move.
My question is concerning the filler spout where to locate, what to use? Find from a junkyard a factory fill spout and add additional filler cap to body? Suggestions, experiences.
What about supplying the fuel. Where the setup is secondary tank to refuel the primary tank or divert directly to supply fuel to the motor?
Any gothas to be aware of?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This is my next project.
My 73 had two tanks and two fill necks. No messing around with a y-pipe trying to fill two tanks at once or a gravity system to fill the main tank from the aux. Just one simple manual valve on the floor to switch between the two tanks and one elec toggle to switch between sending units to run off the one stock gauge. System worked great but the aux sending unit with the stock gauge wasn't too accurate. If I did another system like that I would forget the aux sending unit and when manually switched to aux just know ok...I can go 200 or whatever miles on this tank and keep track of the odo reading.

I used a factory fill neck. I cut out the recessed portion of the body from a parts rig and welded it in.
Here's a pic from the inside.

I'm using a elec switching valve. I haven't been able to check the aux sending unit yet, as I'm still in the build mode ;) .

Jeep Jeep,
Your rig appears to be coming along quite well.
I think I will be looking into performing the same type of thing, although I am working on a pickup. Your electical value switches tanks and gauges or just actuates the change of fuel tanks?
What is that sealant I see on the backside of the filler spout? Thanks for your input

I added a "Y" pipe in my filler and vent hoses that hook to the aux tank. No extra filler needed. I kept the connections low in the lines and have no proplem filling both tanks. the pickup tube was hooked to an electric fuel pump that dumps into the main tank. When it gets down t about 1/4 tank I just flip the switch and it fills the main tank.

My friend ran dual tanks in his truck with no problems.
He simply put a "T" in the fuel line between the two tanks, connected each fuel line from the tanks to the top of the "T" and the fuel line going to the fuel pump to the bottom of the "T". He used only one sending guage in the original tank, so as he used fuel the tanks equalized, allowing the guage to show total fuel left (example: he had two 20 gallon tanks, or 40 total). The only PITA was filler necks on both sides of the rig, other than that, it worked great! No switches or solenoids to worry about!
I have a spare, stock-sized tank I want to install in my J truck and run with this setup. Once I have it installed, I will post results.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.
Jeepingmoose
I look forward to the results of your installation.
I currently have my tank down at a shop. I am having it cleaned up and basically restored prior to starting my installation in hopes of not installing a tank with problems and just having to remove it again once installed. Hope to be starting my installation here in the near future.
If you know of anyone with a stock filler spout and body ring for a 1981 Jeep J10 available let me know I would probably be interested.

Any special tools, torque spits needed etc.
