Well, when i do my rebuild, I plan to do it right, bore out the cylinders to max. Replace all pistons, rods, rings, and thwe works... But I wanna hear what you guys suggest for a upgrade for the cams. I want more HP and performance, and well, I am considering looking into Comp Cams. This a wise choice? What would the serial # be for such a part from where ever? I would like to see some follow ups over time...I'll be back to see how things go. Thanks! smile.gif ;)

What are you rebuilding? 360 or 401 Also are you going headers/RPM intake with 4-barrel? I'm a Crane guy but to each is his own. I have the Crane 260 in my 401 and I think it a great cam for wheel'n. Nice idle, good tq, and it's all done in by 4,500rpm, I think this would be a great cam in a 360. I'm going with the Crane 272 this spring, I want more lope at idle and I want to rev it past 5,000rpm and this cam is good for that. My brother had the Crane 272 and the a Comp (???) and the Crane was way better in performance.

Hi BurnSide, Cam choice is really about personal preference. Some folks here swear by Crane, others use Comp Cams, some use the Summit Racing brand that's made by Super Stock Industries.

My personal preference is the the Summit cam, it offers good performance, in the rpm range the we need, and the price is outstanding. Lifters and cam for less than $100, shipped to your door.

What ever you use, good luck, and keep us posted.

I realize that this is all of a personal choice and all to ones self, but I am just looking for what ppl have in there's, how they like em and all. To get a idea of what I may install into my AMC 360, will be 4 bbl.

You'd like the Summit cam, it works well with a stock engine, or a 4bbl.

The summit one is the one I am going with when I switch over the edelbrock setup on my BlueRhino to my Cherokee. The summit part # is SUM-K8600. There is a slightly more radical one available. That one is SUM-K8601. You'll have to do your research to decide which cam is right for you.

Hey GWAMP,

I noticed you said you were switching from Edelbrock setup. I will be doing cam swap soon and was curious why you are going away from the Edelbrock.

Thanks,

John

I am just switching it from one motor to another. The 360 in my BluePig is about to blow so I am replacing it with the 472 that was going into my now extinct Caddiator project.(time to change my sig!) smile.gif So I am putting the Edelbrock setup in my Cherokee and getting a camshaft to match.

Here's a pretty good discussion:

There is no reason to bore it out to the max, just bore it enough to clean up the cyl. New pistons, rings, bearings, whatever the heads need and bearings are good ideas. Just install new rod bolts and have the rods resized no need for new rods. As for cams just email the cam companies you'e interested in tell them what you want to do and see what they recomend. Then go from there. And be sure and find a good machine shop to do your work.

I think the Edelbrock Performer RPM has gotten a bad wrap on this list for a while. As a RPM cam owner (as well as the rest of the power package), I just want to say I love it.
I still have to pass emissions, and while it doesn't advertise that it will pass, it still does.
As long as your heads are lightly ported and polished, the power package is where it is at. The narrow runners on the intake need the heads to be ported to do their job correctly.

So in long.... if you are willing to mod more than the cam do the Edelbrock power package, and if not, don't touch it with a 10ft pole.
Other than that most of the folk here on the list LOVE the Summit Cam.

Thank you all so much....I will re-read all this later and save any info you guy have contributed...When i begin the rebuild in a few months, I will keep you all up to date on it. Not Sure If i wanna add a Lift to it also, and now i am considering a multi port fuel injection upgrade, and a MSD....and much much more, I want a beast inside, but shy outside! LOL I wish i had more $$....but it will soon run again, and better than AMC ever intended. TY all again, keep the imput comin if ya got more to add.
