As full as my local junkyards are with FF 14bs, why would you want to? They seem inexpensive and plentiful ...

I think the axle tubes are different.

I believe the non ff has a smaller ring gear too, and no pinion support? If so, kind of defeats the purpose of running a 14 bolt, doesn't it? I would keep looking for a ff.

semi-float has a 9.5" ring gear.

One advantage I see to a semi-floating 14 bolt.
If you had an ailing Dana44, owned a high dollar wheel/tire combo and you wanted to keep the 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern.
...and you wanted a stronger axle than a standard garden variety Dana44, a semi-floating 14 bolt would be what I use.
This scenario is a stretch to justify the use of a semi-floating 14 bolt.
IMHO, If I had a broken Dana44, I would repair it or look for another one to bolt in its place.

14B SF is plenty strong, why not just run it?

The SF 14 bolt is pretty strong and the bolt pattern matched my 6 bolt, so it was a no brainer.

parts dont swap from a 9.5sf to a 10.5 or 11.5 ff(11.5 is the new aam axle currently used)
but like mentioned a 9.5sf is a good candidate for swap if you want to retane
the 6 lug pattern wheels;) and alot stronger than a d44 rear.

For the most part, the SF is 6-lug was under the Z71 & heavier GVWR 1500's. The 8-lug SF was under the light duty 2500. IIRC, they are identical except for the lugs/brakes.
Scotty offered me a free 6-lug 14b SF once, but I did not take him up on it as it had 3.42 gears & I think that is too great a leap to my 3.54 front.
