Is there a way to plug an ipod directly into a factory sterio without using one of those FM transmitters?

Cassette tape adapterwould be the only way. The FM transmitters that wire inline with your radio antenna work fairly well, but for the money you can by a new Pioneer CD head unit with a iPod input.

I have a cassette adapter and it works great for ipod and portable cd player. Hard to beat for $10.

I like the cassette adapters.
No radio interference problems. It's hard to find an open channel these days.
I have a Sony adapter and it works great.

I'll probubly go with a new sterio. My stock raido LED panel is dead so it's a guessing game to find good music. Factory speakers seem pretty good so I may just look for a good FM / Ipod capable head unit.

I have a JVC fm modulator that goes between the ant and stock radio it
works great.
I was looking at one of those mega MP3 DVD players, but they took a long
time to scan all the songs. So I pasted.

+1 i use one at work on the boats I run. Works great $9 at walmart. Much better than the silly transmitter thing especially in a populated area where empty stations are hard to find.
I used a pioneer deh - p4900ib with excellent results. looks to be almost factory with it being flush with the bezel - I tried a few radios, and like this the best so far with out breaking the bank. I believe walmart sells them too. I purchased mine at best buy with ipod cord. I run it through glove box. A remote that gains total access to the ipod.. under two c notes. luv it!
The cassette works great too. CHEAP

I ignored it the first time, since I thought it was a typo, but a friendly not-so-subtle-reminder that the electrical unit with knobs and buttons that plays music in your Jeep is called a STEREO. That's spelled S-T-E-R-E-O.
Alternatively, it's also known as a RADIO. R-A-D-I-O.
Leave the bad spelling and "text-speak" to the under 15 crowd. ;)
Back to usefulness, I like Pioneer head units. They have some nice inexpensive ones that have iPod controllers.

I bought one of the in-line modulators for around $35 (much less than a new Pioneer). This plugs into the antenna line and creates its own FM station (and overrides the local radio stations). So, it works well regardless of how "crowded" the area. There is a little loss in sound...but not very noticable (unless very very loud).

There is a thing called an FM modulator? I am not sure the name exactly.. But my bud just put one in his 2000 GC because he wanted to stick with the factory radio. Basically its a box that sits in your dash that you plug the antenna cable into and then the output plugs into your antenna receiver on your radio. It has two output on the side (left right audio) you just plug in a cable with the 2 outputs on one side and the headphone jack on the other and there you go. It'll play on a specified station on the radio but won't be really crappy like a regular fm transmitter as it is directly hooked up to your antenna.....
well i got beat to it I guess i should have read the whole thread before throwing my two cents....

If you want to keep your factory radio in your newer vehicle, there are many 3rd party adapters that plug into the CD changer port on your factory radio.
I have one for my Impala. Works well.

Take the radio out. Put an amp where it was cover it with a metal panel with a little 3.5mm jack wire to the amp input... Plug in ipod and go. Now you have iPod capability and place to mount something useful like cupholders (I will NEVER understand why a luxury vehicle like this did not include cupholders... Baffling). AMPS are cheap BTW... You don't need a massive one.
If you are dead set on using the stock radio a modulator is the way to go... I never liked the tape adapters for some reason.

Minor diversion question please. What "modern" radio with all this latest stuff fits in the stock location ? Suggestions ?
Or do you have to cut the dash to the new size most modern radios have?
Pics would be great ! Please??

one member on here created a set of wood cup holders that he mounted into the stock armrest. It looked awesome and seemed to work well....

I keep my armrest up so I can have the laptop on the seat next to me (music+GPS+satillite maps via internet through tethered cell phone where coverage is available)... I did that in a Mustang and got stopped doing 112 in a 65 zone while the laptop was on the screen that showed peak speed (127). Ooops.
