View Full Version : Gear in park....no power to accessories
Here's the problem: When gear selector is in park or being moved from drive to park, all electrical functions seem to short. Obviously something is cutting power, but the engine does not die or seem to be affected by this. Lights flicker, windows don't go, radio cuts off, etc. Once back in drive, everything is OK. Where do I start looking for a short? Should I disassemble the steering column or look where the saftey cutoff wires go to the tranny. I'm not too well versed in electical stuff, but I don't mind trying. Any ideas would be helpfull.

Something strange is going on. When I got my wag the power seat switch on both seats ran the dome lights, go figure, I never could figure it out. Start searching should be obvious?

Sheesh :D probably a ground somewhere... today I was towing junk to a salvage yard with my 88, well the A/C has not worked in a long time...so I went to turn the radio on, nothing..., just to see what gives, I turned on the A/C is came out ice cold right away!!! I was like, what in the heck is going on !!!! I'm glad it worked though, it's 90 out today....
Also whenever I pump down on the brake pedal, all my dash indicators, climb or decrease...so I never really know what readings to trust...
Good Luck...

Start cheap and easy. For $10 at Kragen or NAPA you can get a new ignition switch that goes on the steering column just below where it goes under the dash. I can't think of anything else off-hand that would have the effect that you described. They should stock the part as it was used by Chevy too.

I vote for the neutral safety switch......Al..
Yeh, that was in my line of logic, but where do I find the neutral safety switch?

The Neutral safety switch only controls the starter-circuit.
I'd be poking around under the dash near the steering-column, and also under the hood around the linkage, to look for bare exposed wires.
