View Full Version : Trying to identify an electrical part
88 GW
Looks like a relay box. Located on passenger side of vehicle about a foot from battery on inner fender.
Secondary wire from + side of battery connects to it. Wire from Alt connects to it with fusible link.
About 3 or 4 other fusible links attached to it all heading into the wiring loom.

solenoid starter
the other side, from where the battery plus side goes to the starter
Michel
Does it serve any other purpose?
The amount of wires going into it seem to indicate something.

No that is not the Selinoid. Your 88 has the Mitsu starter on it, Mistsu has the selinoid on it. The rectangular box is a starter relay. It does do a lot of things. ;)
I thought it was strange there were 2 soleniods.
Thanks, now I can do a search here and look for more info.

Methinks that the collective is confused..
There is a Starter Relay on the firewall, used to relay power to the starter and to act as a termination point for ignition source wiring.
Starters also have a starter solenoid, and these are indeed located inside the starter.
The term "Starter Solenoid" is sometimes used to refer to the "Starter Relay", go figure...

Order a Selinoid for the same and you will get the selinoid that sits on top of the starter. Pre 87 startes do not have a selinoid on the starter at all. Though the relay does almost the same thing it is two different parts altogether. ;)

The solenoid on the starter kicks the gear out to engage the ring gear on the flexplate. The older starters (Ford design) didn't use one.
The starter relay on the fender basically switches the heavy amperage needed for the starter.
Starter relays and starter solenoids. Two differnet gizmos. Just a lot of folks calling the starter relay the starter solenoid and creating confusion.
Create confusion.....something I would never do........
