Stupid trees:

Trails around here are a bit narrow for an FSJ...
Sorry no other pics since I was offroading sort of alone... I did have my 10 year old sister along who is too young to die

Also: I REALLY was not looking for anymore mud this trip... But it found me... After checking like 5 puddles for depth before going through it got old so I did not check this one first... Bad idea.

We managed to get out with a dangerous but effective jury rigged recovery set up... The nearest trees were far away so my 2 ton "fence puller" (a hand operated winch type thing commonly used to pull wire fence taught), a rachet strap, a recovery strap (the only "safe" part of the set up) and a 12,000LBS chain were all used and were still barley long enough.

Darn trees, you never know when one is going to jump out like that.
I got doors for sale if ya need one (not that you would want to ship it).

Go to a junk yard and find yourself an electric fan from a Ford Taurus. Remove your mechanical fan and install the electric fan. It will give you superior cooling, and more importantly (for you it seems), you can install a toggle switch that will allow you to turn off the fan for deep water/mud crossings... That way, you wont have the water getting flung all over the engine compartment soaking everything down, AND you wont have to worry about your fan turning into a propeller and finding its way through your radiator...

BTW, it looks like you are having a lot of fun with your FSJ..
BUT, keep in mind that your sister is right.... She IS too young to die... Be careful in rivers!!!!

Rule #1= do not go wheelin alone. You never know what will happen.
Rule #1 when wheelin with open diffs...... when stuck do not floor the skinny pedal as it will only damage your spider gears and it will not go anywhere anyway when in mud.
Oh and if you do hook up an electric fan. I do not recommend just using a switch...you need to wire it up to relays or some kind of circuit protection so the circuit will not get too hot and let the smoke out.

The switch is IN ADDITION to the normal wiring requirements... I would never reccomend skipping the fuse, relay, and thermostat...
It is a common mod that has been done for many years by people who frequinet mud and water...

You can't see in the video but I am "rocking" the jeep... Hit the gas and letting off while turning the wheel to try to get that back tire to hit the ground enough to bite.. As you can see it did not work (though with a person to jump on the bumper it would have... I did not want to let my 10 year old sister try that though.
As for wheeling alone: You know whats safer than wheeling alone? NOT WHEELING AT ALL! Which would have been my only other option at the time... Since I wanted to go wheel and had no one to go with me alone was my only option... Risk is a matter degrees and the question is how much are you personally are willing to accept... In this case I was obviously willing to do it.

And we all think it won't happen to us.
Last week, after about almost a year of trouble free driving, SlushPuppy decided to die. On the interstate. While I was going to a scheduled appointment for work.
To make a short story boring, I had only a socket set which did me no good since a WIRE had shorted out on my exhaust manifold. I did manage to find a pocket knife and used my cell phone for a flashlight to see the fuse panel.
Fortunately for me, I did get it going again. But if I hadn't, I was on a major road and more importantly, I knew I had cell coverage. In fact, three different people stopped to offer assistance.
This was a "soft" lesson for me. It ended well and I didn't get a ride back home on a rollback. (Not that I've done that before! ;) )
In fact, just today I picked up a more complete tool kit with WIRE CUTTERS, too!
Glad you made it out OK, but you really shouldn't go wheeling alone. Kinda like skydiving without a backup. Sure, most of the time, you'll never need it, but that ONE time you DO need it....

LOL... I carry alll my tools around with me at all times (not that I have many but it is enough to do basic automotive work). I also know that if I get irrevocably stuck I can either: A: walk about or B: start a fire and spend the night. The only real problem comes if I get injured and I do have a ham radio to call for help in an emegency.
Speaking of stalling on the freeway I got vapor lock once and stalled on the freeway... Had to come back the next day after it had gone away :banghead:
