View Full Version : Lost function of oil, water, gas guage?

Happened this morning, but I figured it was a fuse. Guess what it's not the fuse. The guage lights work, amp meter works but the guages don't
I have a copy of the FSM and I ran down the wire from the light switch but it is only for the guage lights. I'm not quite sure what to trace next. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
P.J.

In the 74 TSM start with the section: Electrical 3-45.
The printed circuit behind the dash is part of the temp gauge curcuit as is the CVR(constant voltage regulator) which reduces the voltage to 5v for the gauges to run on. I'd look in that circuit for trouble. The CVR could be fried or a bad connection at the temp gauge?

Desert, sounds like the CVR in the temp gauge went out. You'll have to replace the temp gauge with a new one.

Will all the guages be fried then
That may explain the plastic burning smell, since I just R&R'd the intake and exhaust and painted them, I wasn't sure if it was the paint cooking or something electrical. I guess it may be electrical after all :(
Thanks,

PJ, don't quote me on this cause I haven't dealt with this on a FSJ...yet. But I have on a CJ where the CVR is part of the fuel(?) gauge and isn't replacable but I "think" you can get a CVR from an auto parts store and replace the one on a FSJ temp gauge...I think.
Pull the cluster out and have a look at it. See what the CVR looks like and then go to the parts store and compare what you have to what they have. I'd do that before I'd buy new gauges. Might just be a loose/broken wire or connection to the printed circuit too. Won't really know till you pull the panel out though unless you can "feel" something loose back there and tighten it first.

The CVR is made into the Temp gauge and cannot be replaced by itself. I know cause when I bought my GWag none of the gauges worked, and I couldn't just replace the CVR, so I paid $45 for a new temp gauge.

Jake_S after you replaced the temp guage were the other guages ok then?
UPDATE- Last night my guages started to work, sort of  They appeared to reading about right but the Temp, Gas & Oil flucuated little more than a 1/8" back and forth. I got home and shut the truck down and turned ignition to accessory position and it still was bouncing around.
Tis morning everything seemed fine, but my ampmeter was down in the -40 range at idle and just under 0 at cruising. My alt. may have bit the dust, but why would the guages still bounce around without the truck running

I thought editing my previous post would also bump it up to the top again, guess it doesn't! Please read previous post for update.
Update 9/20 :
Last night guages didn't work, this morning they work again???
