Motor is still running rough, and needs constant feathering of the gas pedal to keep running. I've bypassed the ammeter.

I think I've narrowed my problem down to the wire that runs to the + side of the coil and the starter solenoid from the firewall, they are spliced together I believe. Correct?

Anyway that wire is very hot to the touch (at the firewall) when the motor is running. Also I'm getting 4.6v at the coil (TFI) and solenoid with the ignition on. The manual says 6v is normal. Ohms is normal from the dash connector to the coil, 1.4k.

I cleaned the contacts at the dash connector and hooked it back up, no difference and the wire still gets hot.

Can I run straight 12v to the coil and solenoid? Will this mess anything up?

I know absolutely nothing about electrical stuff so any help is greatly apreciated.

If you're only supposed to have 6v at the coil then it has a resistor inline with it to knock it down from 12v so you shouldn't run it straight on 12v.
You could be losing your voltage from the wire being shorted to ground. (hole rubbed in it hitting metal)If you should have 6v and have 4.6v you only have 75% of the power going to it you should have.
Hopefully someone else will chime in and tell you it's ok to run 12v to that coil. You could run a jumper wire straight from the battery to test it out. If it's a 6v and you put 12v to it...BOOM, been there done that.

Tried the jumper, straight 12v to the + side of coil, no difference.

Glenn, I was having the coil problem in my rig also. Found out you can run 12V to the coil...for about 5 minutes! Then the coil overheats and drops major voltage. The coil won't burn out in that short time, but prolonged 12V supply isn't good in the long run.
I know this does not address your problem, but hopefully helps on the coil question?

Thanks. I'm going to buy another ig. module and slap it on and maybe a new starter solenoid. I'm getting a tad frustrated.

The problem seems to come and go. It will run fine then it won't even idle. The timing is rock solid when checked with a light so I don't think the chain is jumping or loose.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a fuel related problem, doubtful since this all started right after the winch went on. Filter is clear and pump is pumping fine. One strange thing I noticed: since I have a glasspack on the exhaust, it normally would backfire when i'd rev the motor and let off the gas. It no longer does this, the rpms just drop with no backfire.
