View Full Version : Help! Driveshaft angle after 4"susp lift?
OK, so no one responded to my post yesterday but I crawled under and fixed up my 4x4 dash light that was flickering on and off. Now, the only problem remaining is what I believe to be the angle of my driveshaft after installing my 4 inch suspension lift. I took it out and had it rebalanced and that got rid of the major shakes at 50-60mph. I believe the angle of the driveshaft is causing the vibrations at low speeds. Is there something in particular I have to buy (shims or something) to fix the problem?.Obviously some of you guys have done this type of lift before. This is the LAST problem I have with my truck after that it'll be perfect..... untill.....

First you need to find the difference in the angles. You can do this with an inexpensive magnetic angle finder found at most hardware stores. The rear axle yoke and the rear output shaft of the transfer case should be within one degree of each other. If the axle is at 55 dgrees the trans case needs to be around that number and preferable a tad bit more. The rear axle will rotate on acceleration and cause the angle to increase. You will need to add shims to correct any major differences. I have run a vehicle with as much as 3 degrees difference and not had vibrations. The fron pinion should be dead even with the driveshaft. The front is a double carden style so it is totally different. Let me know if you cant get it figured out!!

well i'm going thrue the same thing i need to pick the pinion angle i bought some shims 3 degree but no difrence here i install biger shackles and still i havent seen no change i'm thinking about cuting the diferential just to relocate the angle but i thing that will be doing to much :(
bchesley,
Thanks, I guess my "eye" cant measure the angles that well. I really have no idea if the angle is bad or not. Anyways off I go to measure. I'll let you know what happens.
La mula: cutting the differential! There has got to be an easier solution..good luck

What lift did you put on???? Hmmmm 4" should not have played with your pinion angle.

Perhaps you have the springs on backwards. The long side goes toward the shackle. If you have them backwards the pinion will point downwards causing a vibration. Michael is right a 4" lift shouldnt have caused a vibration. When I say downwards I mean it will be level and not pointing slightley up as it should. DENNIS
Michael: I put on a 4' trailmaster suspension lift
scoutgrl: I checked the leaf springs are on the right way. The good news is that I figured out the reason why my 4x4xdash light was flickering on and off. It was a wire that was grounding smile.gif . That was easy enough! Anyways going to try loading up the rear of my truck with weight and seeing if I lose the vibration. I think that by loading up the truck in the back I will force the angle to change. Then I'll try driving to see if there is an difference. Off I go, to offer my heavy friends a hayride!!
