Hey guys, got a few q's about 5 speeds. Been thinking about a 5 speed to go behind the new stroker and have looked a few options.
First one is the T5. I know it's not really known for it's strength but do you guys think it'd hold up ok to the stroker and some sand dunes? I'm not real rough on it. It'd be in my daily driver and I'm a pretty easy driver. Also need to know how long is the T-5 compared to my current T-176 and will it bolt to my NP208(I assume it will, right?)
Next option would be either an AX-15 or a NV3500. Neither of these are really what I'm looking for. A bit high priced yet and I know that the AX-15 doesn't really have any better rap than the T-176 on the other forums I frequent. Would like to keep my options open though. Anybody got any measurements on these bad boys?
Any other 5 speeds you guys can think of? Price is a huge issue right now.
BTW I'm running 31's and 4.10s also.
Thanks a bunch guys,
Anthony

i don't nuttin about what will bolt where but...as far as the T5 goes I've rebuilt a few they're a pretty good design what you can do is upgrade the input shaft to a Mustang Cobra input shaft to upgrade the strength of it - I can't remember off the top of my head what other differences the Cobra model T5 has but the differences are very few

If you check on the Yahoo 4.0 stroker group you will find that quite a few of them are running AX-15s behind their strokers.

I know I've seen lots of guys running them...guess what I would really rather run is the T-5 because of cost. I think I could probably get a T-5 cheaper than I could get an AX-15 for.
Thanks,
Anthony

Heres a link to a great site for T5 info. Click on the Jeep Gearbox section and enjoy. I love my T5 and its easy to work on and lots of parts available.
As for bolting up to the T176 you'll have to change drive shafts, move the crossmember, and re-drill the bellhousing. The bellhousing may have the T5 holes already, if not they are pre-drilled in a smaller diameter so you will need to drill to the right size and tap for the T5. The 208 will bolt right to the T5 IF you get one for 4WD. I have parts in my current T5 from an S-10 T5, and some from a Mustang T5. The parts will interchange pretty much as long as the ratios and tooth count are the same. This is with a Non world class. The gears between a non and a world class will not interchange. I dont think at least. Good Luck

How much difference in length is there between the T5 and the T-176?
Thanks,
Anthony

Cecil if I remember right, when I did the T5 to T176 swap I had to change my driveshafts about 2 1/2 or 3 inches. Also had to move the crossmember. Hope this helps a little. E mail me at awilliams22@wi.rr.com
if you need more specifics.

Well I love the NV3550 in my XJ and hate the T-5 in my mom's Scrambler, but I'm pretty hard on things and the NV3550 which is very similar to the NV3500 was used behind Chevy and Dodge V8s in half ton trucks so I would think it would be the one for your application since you're going to be making V8 like power with your stroker motor in a heavy truck. I just don't like the T-5 in my mom's Scrambler and I don't think it's up for serious use. Plus this post is the first time I've ever heard anything good about a T-5. If you can afford it, go with the NV3500 or NV3550, you won't regret it. I imagine that NV3500 would last you a lot longer than a T-5.

If you go with the NV3500 or NV3550 get ready to pay about 3 to 4 hundred for an adapter for the AMC motor. The T5 is not recommended for serious off road use. In highway conditions it will do just fine. The World Class T5 is alot stronger than a Non World Class, and can take more torque.

If I get an NV35** then I'll get it from a later model Jeep with the 4.0L. That'll have whatever adapters I'd need. That's way more than I really wanna pay though.
I think I'm running somewhere around 300-325 lb.ft. of torque. Do you think a regular T5 would hold up? It's going in my YJ, not my J-10. It will be mostly highway/freeway and some sand. Nothing really rough, and like I said before I'm a pretty easy driver.
Thanks again,
Anthony
