This is actually an old thread but as a reminder to Ohio drivers... Once again I have to get tags on an 87 GW. For those of you without the interest/money to pass emissions testing or get a waiver you can get by in many states by registering as a light commercial truck. Here in Ohio you simply tell them the truck weighs over 10,800 lbs. (no weight slip is required) and you are given truck tags that don't require an E-check. BTW, I am really not into cheating the system and I can see the point behind testing. I just can't justify the expense on a vehicle that barely passed coming off the dealers lot.

I always wondered about registering as a light commercial truck, don't need to my self yet, how do you go about doing it? Does it require any special useage? What about insurance?

A LEGAL ALTERNATIVE IN TEXAS :

Any 3/4 ton truck that is 84 or older, is considered "Grandfathered" (You bought it without the emissiosn stuff on it, hence not required to put it on there) and a "Farm Vehicle" which does NOT require a Catalytic Converter due to the heat they generate. Picture driving through tall brush or grass on a farm with a HOT cat and BANG, field fire. The emissions tests are waived.

And you don't even need Farm Plates! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

There's nothing to it. Same place and you register annually. In Ohio there is no proof of usage intent needed. As far as insurance I can't see why they would even need to know. I owned my construction business with trucks for some time. When I sold the business I kept (2) of the trucks but when the time came to get new tags/insurance it did not change my rates 1 bit (light commercial to passenger). Other states... who knows? I just wanted to pass an alternative along since many of us would love to modify (see sig.) but don't want to mess with the goverment's master plan.
