So Where Are you Mounting Your Amplifiers?

So Santa is coming in two weeks and my wife got me an Alpine 4-channel and a nice set of infinity components for the front. I'll probably get matching two channels for the rear at some point.

The 4-channel is about 3" thick but I don't believe that it will fit under either of the front seats because of the power seat motors (haven't measured it though). This is probably a good advertisement for why the vinyl security roller screens are so desireable for the rear of the rigs but, where are you guys mounting your stereo equipmnet (subwoofers, amplifiers, etc)? I don't live in an urban area but mounting these things in plain sight of the general public like in the cargo area or on the wheel wells just gives me the willy's.

Mine is mounted in the rear pass side compartment where the jack is- it makes wiring the sub and the rear speakers very easy- the front speakers will require some wire...

That is a great idea. What did you mount it to though since the most of the well is external to the vehicle? Also, for me to do that, that will force me to isolate the leaks that I'm getting through the side windows!

I mounted it on a piece of plywood that fits into the compartment very tight... I think I attached the plywood to something with a metal bracket... I will need to look.

BTW- the jack is gone...

I've got my linears tucked up under the dash.:D

On my buddy's '79 Cherk he's got 'em mounted to the back of the rear bench and the sub box behind that.

On most of the systems that I have built, I have used an amp rack attached to the sub enclosure.

I guess another possiblity could be the same approach that Monkeyfrog had but on the driver side behind the panel. I still use my jack and bought a universal lug wrench cross type tool which is stuck in the passenger side too. Oh yeah... don't forget the jumper cables as well. I wonder if there's any room under the rear seat? Doubt it but I figured I'd ask. I also considered somewhere inside the dash but am unsure if there will be room. When I wire up I'll be pulling the head unit and will take a look.

i did the passenger side thing too. I used some Aluminium L brackets and bolted them to the inside. use some spacers since the bottom and top don't line up and with the spacers you will be able to get your panel back in place. I see the 'bottom' of the amp so it won't win any Car Stereo contests but it works great.

i mounted the second amp using the same strategy on the driver side. There is less room due to the gas filler.

What Will e said is how I intend to mount an amp when I get 10" subwoofers for the GW. I will put them in new boxes where the stock speakers go and put my speakers in the rear doors (right now I have 6 1/2" Pioneers in foam baffles in the stock bracket that is slightly enlarged, works great). There's very little room under the dash, the only other place might be on the headliner, you'd have to make some brackets that attach to the roof braces, and bolt the amp through the headliner to those. You can't put it right on the roof's sheetmetal of course because the vibration and sun will kill it.

There is a HUGE chunk of space under the dash on the passenger side.
(If you have A/C, just have to drop it to gain access)

Mine had an amp up there when I bought it, didn't even realize it until I rebuilt my A/C.

Better spot IMHO since shorter cables = less money spent.

These are all great ideas and have given me something to plan for. Wouldn't be too hard to drop the AC duct work either. Thanks.

I guess while we're on the subject, I might as well ask... the Infiniti's I ordered are the 60.9 series with separate 1" tweeters. I'm hoping that I'll be able to mount them up on the dash near or even to the pillars. If not, I'm thinking that maybe I can hunt around the junk yard and look for triangular shaped enclosures for them so I can place them there. We did have a Chrysler Concorde with black interior once. If I remember right, it seems like the tweeters it had were kind of triangular shaped. I'd be curious to hear what other have done here as well.

i would not mount it under the seat, or you may overheat the unit. the fins on the unit will work best at dissipating heat if they are vertical. i like the idea of them behind the rear cargo panels.
