I own an 1982 J-10 that I have only had for about 6 months. I found an 88 J-20 for sale with 84000 miles and a 360 auto For $1000.00
It's in better shape than my J-10. How many J-20's were built in 1988. I know its the last year they were offered, I just do not know how rare they are.

Thanks,
Joe

Welcome to the Forum and the madness of Full Size Jeep ownership.
It seems you already have the diease...you own one and wanting another! HAHAHA.

According to our Tech Library, during that last model year there were 1,153 J Trucks built.
Now, how many of those were J20, I do not know.

I think the correct answer is zero because all 1988 J-trucks were 1987's that didn't sell so they were rebadged 1988..

so any idea how many rebadged 87's became 1988's. I saw somewhere about 150 and I am guessing maybe 25 of them were J-20's any ideas?

Correct...that is why I mentioned the last model year.
Prob'y never know how many J Trucks were rebadged and sold as 1988.

Well for $1000.00 I am thinking it would be a worthwhile investment, besides, it has half the mileage of my current truck. Now I know my wife so I am pretty sure I will have to sell my current one. Anyone want an 82 J-10?

The vin number should tell you if it was built in 88. 10th digit should be a J for 88.

Not many 88 J20s. I found one outside Chicago and trailered it back to St. Louis.
After running the VIN, it was definately an 88. But, it had been a plow truck and was just too beat up and rusted out to save. I used the axles to swap into my J10 and sold the rest for parts.
Dam shame too...
That's a rare truck. Grab it if you can.

A long time friend of mine in the Tallahassee area has a red 88 J20 he bought new in Atlanta. That is the only one I have personally seen. His is pretty rusted from coastal construction duties.

The Jim Allen Jeep book shows these numbers on J20 production:
83 - 1217
84 - 821
85 - 768
86 - 749
87 - 639

No listing on 88s but you can bet it is below 639. The Patrick Foster book mentions the J10 and J20 was cut during the announcement period for 88 models. So, I think any of the J20s between 84 & 88 could be considered rare considering less than a thousand each year. Real question: What condition is it in?

I am now curious about my 1984 J-10, I am sure it isnt as rare as the J-20 but I would like to know how many were built. Can someone point me in the right direction in the Tech library...I coulnt find that info.

I shed a tear for that '88 J20.
I know you can not save them all.

It has typical surface rust, but its in better shape than my J10. and the interior is in great shape, nice and clean. Rear bumber is shot, and severly dented. needs to be replaced. Front bumper has a pusher bar on it with foglights with spot rust on it. heres a link. http://omaha.craigslist.org/cto/918751729.html
