It appears that the electronic whatchamacallit that is mounted on the drivers fender of my 87 Jeep GW is going bad. my car runs great. then dies unexpectedly, only to crank right back up and sputter then run great some more. when it dies, it turns off like you cut it off with the switch. anyway, all that aside. if i use an aftermarket ignition(Jacobs, MSD or Accel) can i remove this box?
Thanks in advance
Ralph

Instead of an aftermarket ignition that would have to connect in-line to your ignition module, I'd get a Ford Motorsports ignition module that'll just replace the old one, P/N M-12199-C301. It's a capacitative discharge unit and manufactured by MSD; unplug the old one and plug this one in.
Here's a page with the best price I've found so far:

Ralph,
Thanks for the info... would you then do the Distributor upgrade from the tecnical section or is this enough?
Thanks

Ralph,
In reading the information, i noticed that the part number you posted does not mention that it is Capacitive Discharge. But the one right below it does. Can you double check the part number for me to be sure we are talking about the right ignition?
Thanks

i upgraded my ignition system from stock to jacobs pro street. at first i used the "brain box" to trigger the jacobs unit, but after having some other problems i decided to remove the OEM ignition box and i now have the output of the distributor triggering the jacobs. simple is usually better.

Spruce...
I have used the Jacobs on a previous GW and was very pleased with the performance. Which one are you using and do you have a wiring schematic for running straight off the distributor?
Thanks

I have been having the same problem with my Jeep. It was doing this about 4 months ago so I replaced the ignition module. Everything was fine until the other night when it happened again and then wouldn't crank. i left it overnight and tried it the next morning, and it was still slow to start but did run. After that it has been ok again and runs like new. Is there anyway I can fix this problem without having to kep buying new ignition modules?

The part description also doesn't describe MSD as its manufacturer. I read this on the label of one of these units.
