What are the real limitations of our d44's? i have a 79' Cherokee and ultimately i want to run 37x14.50's under it... im just wondering what kind of problems i may run into with the axles?

Dana 44's hold up well in stock J- trucks with up to 33's in casual off roading. Anything bigger or more serious in the off roading world is asking for trouble. I am running a J-20 front dana 44 in the front of my CJ with 37 Krawlers but it's got alloy axles good joints ect. Cj's are a lot lighter.
I would plan on going to front 60's then. Lots of folks here have done it and could give you a detailed list of things you will need. It's not as bad as you might think. You will also have to convert to a spring over axle set-up.

Yep.most on here say 33's are about the limit, 35's your gonna break something unless you take it easy.

yeah... i kinda figured 35's would be pushing the limits... i just always see the pics of "RiverBeast" and its on like 39's or bigger and that looks like a 44 front to me???

I don't know what axles it had,but I've seen people run some big tires with 1/2 ton axles around here. They mostly just play in the mud or just ride around with big tires for the looks of them.

Yeah they would be fine for muddin and light trail running, but wouldnt hold up running them hard.

yeah well mud is typically what i play in but occasionally the trails around here lead to some krawling and hill climbs... i guess if im easy with my right foot i can probably make the 44's last til i find my 1-tons....

those axles got bent too.
Ive been running 35's on my 44's for a couple of years. Now got a 14 bolt but keeping the front 44. but Im pretty easy on the throttle. I am gonna get a front 60 one day, just a matter of when the funds for it get alotted from the wife.
