I picked up a D44 from a 197? last week, and started the process of tearing it down to nothing for a total rebuild, however the axle is fighting me every step of the way.
This is a front D44 without manual hubs
Last night I was finally able to get the Wheel bearing lock nut off. And I was hoping that was it, and the disk was going to come off... NOPE.
I still need to get the LOCATING Washer, and INNER Lock nut off.
MY question is.. How do these come out.
The Manual I have swoes a pic of the locating washer coming out, but doesn't explain how to get it out, or what tool to use??
And then once that is out, does the inner lock nut come off the same way the outter one did (hard). Is it the same special socket, or is there another one needed?
Thanks for any help.

Same socket, use a pick or a piece of bent wire to hook the washers and
pull them out. (neither of the nuts should be that bad torque spec on the
outer is 50 ft/lbs, and the inner is 50 ft/lbs then back off a 1/6 turn or
there abouts from memory)

I assume you're using the four prong socket already. Use a pick to grab the edge of the washer and pull it off. The inner nut is just like the outer nut, except it has a nipple on it to locate it with the washer (nipple seats in one of the holes on the washer). It shouldn't be that hard to take apart, unless everything is rusty. In that case, slather it with PB Blaster.

Make sure you line the nipple of the inner nut up with the washer upon reassembly. It'll take a couple of tries moving the nut back and forth to get the nipple to line up with ine of the holes.

Huh, I should have known that it should be an easy job. Nothing on this axel has been easy yet. But I am almost there (by the time I am done there will be about 1.5 cans of PB on this axle.
Thanks for the replies, I will just have to work a little harder, and I will get them off. By the time I am done this is going to be one nice axle. Thanks again for your help.
