What to offer for a 72 Waggy

I spotted a parked 72 Wagon in my neighborhood the other day and today decided to stop and asked if it was for sale. The elderly owner said it was purchased new by her parents and she would consider selling it but had no clue what it would be worth. It was last registered in 2005, and sitting out back under a coat of leaves, so I'm assuming it will need alot of fixing up. The body and interior are in excellent condition except some rust through in the left rear quarter. I'm the worst when comming up with offers for garage finds and know that these old wagons sometimes bring outlandish prices. Any one have an idea what a good bottom line offer on one of theese would be without insulting the owner?

Definitely no more than $500 tops. Considering you don't know the mechanical condition.... I'd think maybe $200 bucks as that's what they were going for scrap awhile back (although right now you'd only get $8 here in Redding.... and no I didn't forget any zeros).

Seriously? $500.00 sounds good to me. $200.00, even better:D I might get the door slamed in my face on that one. Hey all she can say is no right? I just hope she doesn't talk to any of the E Bay or Craigslist people selling these things because all of the ones i've looked at on line.. $$$$$ for some real junk:banghead:

Call the DMV w/ the plate# it may have a few hundred in back fees due if they didn't non-op the registration.
I got burned ($390 fees)on a vehicle a few years back by trusting the PO.

Ditto that; make sure the title is clean, and that there are no outstanding issues or liens on the vehicle.

Unless you can slap on a dealer's or mechanic's plate and road test the thing, and/or be provided with service records, then $500 tops.
