I did an SOA on my 78 wag and a week later blew the center pin out of the doble cardan joint on my front driveshaft. i was told before the soa (while getting the shaft lengthened 2'' in anticipation of the lift) that the pin was worn and should be replaced. What i want to know is... is the angle of the driveline too steep for that silly double cardan joint with the stock transfer case position, oh yeah i angled up the front pinion about 2 or 3 degrees past stock.
Thanks guys
-Chris

What springs do you have...stock or lifted? Also... the lengthening of the driveline prior to the lift could have been a mistake.... could have been too long and put too much pressure on the CV... I had this happen (once... ;) )

FYI- Factory CV joints are rated at 16 degrees operating angle (constant max angle) and MAX angle of 22 degrees.

Operating the factory CV constantly between 16 and 22 degrees will destroy it in a hurry.

That is the only killer deed with the SOA on our rigs. No matter what they say the best fix is to go with a reverse rotation 44/high pinion. This decreases the drop in angle of about 4".

You can spend a fortune on custom shafts, limitting cables but this summer I am doing the reverse 44 and all my worries will be over!!!! tongue.gif

Hey good luck to you I know it can be a real pain in the arss

i have the stock springs with an add-a-leaf. im not sure of the exact degree of the driveline angle, but i will check. When i have the driveshaft under load i was getting a vibration from the front driveshaft. I dont know if that was from the angle of the cv or if it was the VERY worn centering pin. hmmmmm.....

Todd-what did you do for your front driveshaft??

You might also need to install a part time kit to keep the front shaft from spinning at highway speeds. That way you will only need the front shaft to turn while in the dirt. If you are driving the Dual CV joint at 65 it will not operate long at speeds!!

Mike,

Good point...foregot 78=QT unit ;) . the P/T kit will save your shaft joint as well...but it has to be within the operational range or it'll still go out.

As to my front shaft...er...uh....well....still working on it.... :D I have a few options, but I am alos swpping in a Dana20...when I have time to do it all.

www.highangledriveline.com (http://www.highangledriveline.com) is a GREAT source for driveline os this nature. Jesse is real down to earth. Most comapnies will tell you they won't warrantee their shafts until you convert the QT to a part-time unit....for the obvious reasons.

I have been working my front shaft issues for a while now...but it's kinda on hold until the Dana20 gets in...don't wanna do it twice.

Mike,

I know we talked on this before...what Ford models carried the high pinion 44..with the pass side drop...any ideas? I will be scouting a newfournd yard this weekend..I already know he has no 60's

Good point Todd forgot all about the Pass side drop.Hum? I know the older chevys have the correct drop but I am not sure if the High pinion option? Maybee there are some chevy experts reading this that can shed some light on the subject.

The late 70's ford F-150 had the left side drop and the reverse rotation for the wags that have the matching drop, Then again does it really matter you will have to have it re-tubed and axles fitted to it? Maybee it would be worth asking around about. Axles would not be all that much, I believe the front shaft rotation is the same ? from the t/c. It might be worth talking to you drive line guy about.

Well got to run to pheonix now, start my night shifts tonight :( later
