well, i'm new to waggies, and so i'm new to this site. i've been hangin' over at the jeepster commando forums cuz that's what i'm in the middle of building.
so, i just bought another jeepster and i want to stick it on a waggy chassis. i think i'm lookin' at 1980-1991? grand waggies. my first concern is: PROS/CONS OF THE DIFFERENT T-CASES...
the 208? the 219? the 228? the 229 type I or II?
COMMAND TRAC, SELEC TRAC, QUADRA TRAC.....???????:banghead:
are those all the choices? i'm looking for what to avoid. so, tell me what these cases are like to drive on/off road. i love versatility, so which ones kick *** and which ones are a PITA:thumbsdown: ?
thanks, kevin

I'm about to use an '85 GW for a frame donor for a '51 Willys wagon. I'm going to use a '91-'96 4.0 6cyl with the OD trans and the 231. If I were to be able to choose, I've heard good reviews about the 208. The 219 is the worst of them and most dont like the 228 or 229 because the parts are getting harder to find. I wanted a mid size power plant for mine and got the whole works for a song.
Hope this helps....

Welcome to the site!
What is your flavor? I mean, you gonna do hard core wheeling with it or is it also to be used for some daily driver use? How about snow, rocks, sand, mud? All durable part time tcase choice would be 208. With winter driving on snow and ice, a 228, 219 or 229 would be good to have. These have locked option for low range but limited or open differential type operation in 4 high. I think the 228 would be the least favorable, but all are very capable.

hey, thank you guys.
as far as "flavor", i want a wifey type rig. we have ALL 4 SEASONS here in washington. this rig will be a grocery grabbin' little tough-Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley. gotta have good road manners.
i also friggin' love the snow and i tear it up every year around town (i may even mount a plow on this one). and for off-roadin' we have sand covered basalt rock (slippery) but no real boulder stuff, washed out mountain roads (some deep ravines), and narrow fire roads that've grown over (tough to get back out of).
i kinda like having a full time 4x4 for this rig. no hubs for the wife to get goofed up. simple t-case operation? if it's more than UP=2WD...DOWN=4X4, then the wife gets confused. and i couldn't care less about 1/2 of a mile per gallon.
so, the 208 & 228 have diffs? and the 219 & 229 have VCs? i actually think the VCs sound cool (except they're wierd, and a fail point). parts availability is huge, though i certainly don't mind modifying stuff for durability or even rebuilding a vc?
i think i'll eventually just start a jeep farm:fsj: :fsj: :fsj: :fsj: :fsj: :fsj:

208 Pure part time case (2wd hi, 4wd hi lock, N, 4 low lock)
219 Full time 4wd case (4 hi, 4 hi lock, N, 4 low lock)
229 Part time/full time case with VC (2wd hi, 4wd full time, N, 4 low lock)
228 Same as the 229 with open diffy rather than VC (86 only)
For winter on road driving it is hard to beat a 229. for crawling it would be OK, but it would not be the best for sand (no -4hi lock) the 219 is ~ the same case as the 229 but rather than 2wd it has a 4 hi-lock, so if you can live with full time 4wd it is not bad.
I think the least desirable case is the 228 (86 only) open diff version of the 229
the 208 is a fine part time case, not as nice for winter road driving, but a toughter case for off road.

eventually, i've been looking into a lock right for the rear, and a true trac hypoid gear-activated limited slip for the front.
i want it to get mean for off road, but do corners around town. looks like, ideally for me, the 219 would be best. hmmmm.........1980-1983???

If you are OK with not having a 2WD option, the 219 is a good choice. Hard to find parts for but probably not too hard to find replacements in junkers. I sold one several years ago for $35. Sheesh. But then the QT stuff that is scattered and shared amoungst diehards of QT users. It is nice to have a network of good resources here.

I hope this isn't a thread hijack, but since we're talking transfer cases, what's the difference between a Type 1 & Type 2 229? The tech library says '87s could have either one, and since I've got an '87.........
just curious
BTW, thnx for all the above info.....through this thread I just learned more about FSJ T/C's in the past two minutes than I have in the past two years:thumbsup:
