Hi out there in Jeep land. Could anyone out there, with a working 4 wheel drive tell me how the vacuum line hook up on the np229? My 84 gw 6's 4 wheel was not working when I bought it. Aparently the manifold had come loose and melted the lines before I owned it. The guy i bought it from said it was working great last winter and all I had to do was replace the hoses. well that wouldn't be so hard if I knew why I have only two lines coming from my switch in side and three steel lines going to the transfer case moter. I have read up and know iI also have three lines going to my front axle, which are just hanging there, but I also have a larger hose that is attached to the front axle that has been plug up. Any help would be most apprecited

Let me know if this picture helps.

If you need more pictures, I will see what I can do on Saturday. I will be hopefully finishing the body lift.

I just went through this one:
You have a harness on the front differential that holds 3 lines. You also have a shift motor with 3 nipples for those lines very close by. The order goes as follows:
Hose closest to the driver's side tire hooks to the top of the shift motor. The one in the middle goes to the middle of the shift motor. Etc.

well I think I figured out the hook ups for the vac lines on the front axle, but I still can't get the 4wheel drive to work. Does anybody know if the vacuum for the front axle switch come from the transfer case moter or does it have its own suppley?

I'm still not sure what the larger hose connected to the front axle is for,it's not one of the three smaller lines. Does this have anything to do with the 4wheel drive not working?

One more thing, has anybody had the metal lines go bad,(rusted up or plugged)?

I have a feeling the big hose is for venting.
I ran my vent hoses in my axels as high as possible.

I hope this helps.

The large line on the front axle is the vent tube and has nothing to do with the 4X engaging.
The vacuum source is the same for the front axle and X-fer case. The front axle must engage before the vacuum motor on the X-fer case will get vacuum - meaning the front axle must engage before the xfer case will engage.
First, when you move the selector switch to 4 wheel in the cab (engine running - trans in neutral) do you hear a slight hissing sound? If you do then CAREFULLY get under the Jeep (trans in park - emergency brake on) and have someone move the selector switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel while you watch the vacuum motor on the X-fer case to see if it tries to move the linkage. If it is trying to move the linkage assit it carefully with your hand. Maybe the linkage needs to be lubed or is bound up.
If you dont hear that hissing sound then unplug the vacuum line from the back of the selector switch and see if one of the lines coming in has vacuum. If not trace it back and find out why there is no vacuum.

I believe the red hose is the vacuum supply and the yellow hose is the one that supplies vacuum to engage the front axle.

Try that and let us know...
