I was wondering if anyone has done an atlas swap in their GW? I was considering the new Highlander model which has a 3.03:1 low. What is the input shaft size? Do I need to have to install locking hubs? Do the twin sticks work through the floorboard o.k.or is there interferance? Any help would be appreciated as I am tired of my NP229 and by the time I make mine "Bulletproof"(Yeah right) I would probable spend within $1,000 of the new AtlasII Highlander.

Fulmetal has an Atlas in his '83 wag. he is in the middle of a move right now and hasn't been on here for awhile. Do a search and then you can find his email. I am sure he will be happy to help you out.
whats the difference between the atlas and the other cases, i would imagine it be like a d20/18?

we were told by AA that the 205 has an input torque rating of about 900 ft lbs. the d300 has an input rating of about 600 ft lbs. the atlas cases have an input rating somewhere in between. the representative we talked to could not(or did not want to ;) ) tell us the exact input torque rating of the atlas.
not sure how the d18/20 compare to that. the 20 im sure is pretty close to the d300,the 18 may be less due to its offset rear output and the way the power flows.
you would not haev to install lockouts, but i for one certainly would smile.gif
if you simply want a strong xfer, you do have other options for a xfer case swap.a 208 is a fairly strong bolt in replacement.all youll need is a longer rear driveshaft.a 208 should hold up to all but the most extreme abuse with large tires and a very high HP motor. it is a very strong case.
how attached are you to your front axle? if you want to swap him for a pre 1980 pass side diff front end you could use a gm 205,a d300,or a d20.
if you need extra low range, you can add a klune V crawler box in front of a 208 or a d300.a Klune V and d300,BTW,is still shorter than the 229
not knocking the atlas(id have one if i had the $$ ) but there are other swaps that will give you good results and performance for waaaay less money.
i do remember that fullmetal really likes his,if you have that kinda money to spend on it

OK I have to respond to this one, :D The Atlass I feel is the easiest swap going except for maybee the 208. It is fully indexable to a wide array of drops. I was told that the dtock Atlass will handle upwards of 800-1000 ponnies  .
The swap is straight forward and yes I recomend the manual hubs, the twinn stick works great.
Is it the cheapest swap NO but it is almost a drop in!! Got to love the gear driven case, it is the only auto tranny that I have ever had where you could actually compression break :D :D
Hope this helps I got to run Happy Holidays to all smile.gif
