Have been smelling gas for a couple of days. Went to back out of work and was throwing a puddle. The gas appears to be coming from the bottom half of what I belive is the fuel pump (at work, don't have any books to verify). It is on the left (as you look at it from the front) side of the engine. It attaches to the block with two bolts and has two lines coming out of the top of it (one is the gas to the carb). It is on my 83 Chero with a 258.
Is it the fuel pump? Can it be salvaged or does it need replaced?
Thanks for any info.

yup fuel pump, if it is lealing from the halves and not a line then yup its shot, time for an autozone run and they are not expencive.
just make suer it is not a line leak first
Ditto on the fuel pump or line leaks. Also check your eng oil for fuel contamination. If the diaphragm is also leaking in the pump your adding gaso to the eng oil :(

Okay, I got the pump out but can't get it to go back in. Is there a trick to it?
Thanks for the help, just trying to get home. :D

.. I don't have a 258 but would rotating the engine 180 degrees help by moving the cam lobe to the bottom position?? .. ds..

there is kind of a trick, I imagine you can rotate the cam around but when I replaced mine all I needed to do was tilt the body of the pump down while you start the bolts. This allows the spring loaded leaver to not fight you while you bolt them in.

Thanks guys. I finally sneaked it in there. Of course, when I went to put the fuel line on it snapped. Sitting at work, everyone else has gone. Oh, my wife will really love the FSJ now that she has to come pick me up! That's okay, I love it and she doesn't have to drive it!
Actually, thinking about those last responses, does the arm for the pump go above or below the cam?
Thanks again. I'll be putting on a new fuel line in the dark and resetting the pump if necessary.
