I did a search but still left confused. I read several post about Aussie lockers with the 208 and 229 but none about the 228. Is there any reason I couldn't run Aussie lockers front and rear with a NP228? Is there a better modification I should do?

Guess I will ask two questioned in this post. I hear that the 208 is a good transfer case. What is needed to change out my 228 for a 208.

To swap in a 208 you need a longer rear drive shaft. You can put lockers in if you want to, but Dana 44 fronts may not hold up long with a locker and it is very hard to turn while locked. I have a locker in the rear and a LSD in the front and it works very well.

The reason is the full time case. If you can't unlock your front hubs you will always have a front locker engaged.

NP208 is a part time case and can be shifted into 2wd. As can a 229 which can be both full or part time.

There's no issue regarding the D44 front holding up to a locker. There are thousands of them out there wheeling every day.

A good read: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/tcase/tcaseinfo.html

Maybe I don't understand what I have. I think of a full time transfer as always being in 4wd, ex. QT or like my old range rover that only had the option of 4L. With my 228 I can completely come out of 4 wheel drive when I switch the dash level over to 2wd and then only the rear alxe is engage.

Is this thought right or am I more confused than I thought?

Edit- I think I understand now, but just I case I don't I think I will change my 228 to a 208 and not have to worry about it anymore.

My bad. :o

You have the 228 and it is a part time case. I had 219 on the brain.

Locking diffs wouldn't be an issue. Just unlock the hubs and shift into 2wd. ;)
