I just purchased 1970 Wagoneer with TH 400 and Dana 20 combo. I drained and installed new filter and pan gasket in tranny. I went to drain transfer case and when drain plug was pulled, it seemed a few quarts of transmission fluid drained out. I was under impression from factory service manual that a 80/90wt gear lube was to be used in transfer case.
I checked into this a bit more and found that some tranny/transfer combos have channels between them allowing fluid to circulate. I am not sure what to do... Anyone know anything about this?

The TH400 and D20 do not share fluid. The D20 takes gear oil. I have had 2 tranny shops put ATF in my D20. I think that they think that the t-case is a quadra not the D20. I think there fluid books do not go back past 75.... Use gear oil in your D20. ;)

your not suppose to even use ATF in a QT case unless you have done the part time kit to it. a normal QT case takes a special fluid.

Even so, the D20 case do take gear oil.

Could be blown seals/gaskets too between the trans and the tcase..
