Will a 1982 727, presently attached to a 360, swap in place of a 1984 904 behind a 258?
I don't know what the Tcases are but the 82 tcase has no 2 wheel drive position and has 4HI lock, 4HI, N, 4Low on a lever on the floor. The 1984 has a switch under the dash marked: 2wd-4wd, with a pin under it that you pull down, and a lever on the floor.

You guys most likely have the NP219 transfer case in your 82 rigs. The 219 is a full time case and was labeled as a "Quadra-trac" by Jeep, it is like a second generation Q-trac. Not a whole lot of info on them....I also have one in my parts rig. I believe the main difference between an original Q-trac and a 219 is that the 219 does not require the special, high $$ lube.

Your 84 rig has a NP229 with a vaccume(sp?) actuated front axel. The 229 has a 2-hi,4-hi(full time), and a 4-low. The 229 is an okay unit if maintained well (like everything else on a Jeep), however it is not recommended for heavy 4-wheeling.

As far as trannys......I *believe* the 727 was an option on 258 powered FSJ's with the tow package. So if that is true, then you should be able to swap pretty easily.

Check ot the tech pages for alot of drivetrain (and much more) info on FSJ's
