What size alternator should I have in my 84' GW with AC?? I know there was a heavy duty option that came with a bigger alternator, but I don't have that option. Should it be the 78 amp?? thanks

I'm not sure that it will hurt your machine to install the highest amp available, I did I think it was a 94 amp. The a/c does require a little more juice and I had the choice of three flavors, the cost wasn't that much different.

the real alternator question, you hafta find the answer to is what size is the mounting bolt? 5/16 or 3/8? thread, 1/2" or 9/16" heads? the 2 sizes dont interchange. the brackets are different. i think the mounts have diff.radii so its not just a matter of drillin and tappin. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/redface.gif so if you wanna get a larger alt, you may hafta dig up a new bracket too. guess how i came by this factoid, it wasnt on the 'net.

When the voltage regulator on my stock alt burned out, I put in a ~95 amp'er, which, i am told, will be good if I put an "accessory" on.

Hey Andy,
Let me guess... you found that our by doing it yourself?? ;)
Don't you just love finding things out that way? Hey, at least you learn something and can keep other people from making the same mistake.
Thanks for the help. I got a 78 amp which is supposedly for the GW with AC. We will see

well if ur jeeps use the common delco type internal regulated alternator that GM has used on most of their cars from the seventies, than u can certainly use a delco 120A alt from an 85 caprice/impala v8/v6.
im using this type on the SBC in my wag to replace the OE 63A i had.
but as always, if u buy it rebuilt, it will be a 1$ an amp...

When I went to replace the alternator in the '87, I had a choice of stock replacement or high capacity.
I chose the High Capacity @ 93amps. The standard was something like 64amps?? Does that sound right?
I know the option that I chose was the 93amp and it is a direct bolt in. I paid $58 for this altenator with a 2 year warrenty from a local parts store (Central Auto Parts for those in the Central Florida area..)
I'm real happy with this alternator...

Well, that sounds like a deal. I got one from pepboys about two weeks ago for $75 with the core return. Basically, that purchase has detered me from buying parts from pepboys anymore. The dang thing was put together wrong first off. There are two halves of the alternator, and they were positioned together 90 degrees off. Stupid. And on top of that, the thing was faulty and was WAY overcharging my battery. I took it back and got original equipment from Napa. I got a 78amp alt. from them for @ $150!! Expensive, yes, but it works right.
One thing that I still get though... at night, if I have my headlights on, and I am at a stop, idling, my lights dim down, exterior and interior, and all the electric equipment gets bogged down. Does anyone else notice this?? Is it supposed to be like this?
thanks
Ted
