I'm still looking for a solution to having a removable 3rd seat in the GW for the kiddies. I've had no luck so far in finding one, although I'm told they existed. I'm wondering if I couldn't buy a used CJ rear seat and bolt it into the cargo area. Any one done that out there? Any one know the width and depth of those seats?

whabbout access? headroom? stuff like that. most rigs with a 3rd seat were set in a well. im talking the fullsize station wagons of the 50s-70s vintage.other ones were variations on the mini-bus theme. i s'pose you could rig a rear facing seat, but it would still be a hassle. seatbelts?

Andy's on to something... It might be a good idea to take the existing back seat out - set it in the back and see if your head is stuck to the ceiling even though it's for the kiddies...
If you're really ambitious, you could do a rear facing seat, cut a well in the floor and put the spare on a swing away...

Guys, thanks for the reply. I really think it's not as complicated as cutting the floor, etc. If youv'e seen what Volvo puts in the cargo area as a 3rd seat you'd understand where I think I'm going. Just a simple seat facing rear, basically sitting on the floor.
Sure mounting holes (threaded nuts welded to the floor) would be needed as well as seat belt mounts. Am I missing something? Other than the seat that is!
Thanks, rebuttals?

I ran across a company on the internet that makes a rearward facing 2 person seat for the XJ cherokee 4 door's trunk. I bet one of these would work. Sorry I don't remember the URL, but I found it by searching www.Yahoo.com (http://www.Yahoo.com) under the Jeep section.

"Performance Products for Your Jeep" has a rear facing seat for the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. It comes with lap belts and adjustable head rests and claimes to pop out quickly when needed. Available colors are Black, Charcoal, and Light mocha. The seat is a bit pricey at $499.71. They do have a real nice color catalog.

why not conside a rear seat from a CJ-7? Should fit, bolt through the floor with backing plates, seal the holes with good sealer, install seatbelts from a donor sj, and you're set....should cost total of around $150.....if that.

I have a couple CJ rear seats also. On some the seat belts are bolted to the brackets that bolt to the body. It should fit fine because I doubt the distance between the CJ wheelwells is larger than the wells in a wag or chero. Also the brackets that bolt to the body are raised about 4" so there would be room for a couple small children but probably not adults smile.gif But of coarse you could make some brackets to raise the seat too.
I think it would work great, there are even some fold and tumble versions that are easier to remove.

Ok, here are some pics:
I just threw my old CJ5 back seat into the back and snapped a couple images. In one of the pictures you can see my size 11's to give you some idea of legroom, or lack thereof. I suppose it could be worse, for a kid there may be plenty of legroom.

The rest are at CJSeat (http://www.ed.jack.net/hack/jeep/wagoneer/CJSeat/)
or CJSeat (http://24.60.53.146:8080/hack/jeep/wagoneer/CJSeat/) (if the first one doesn't work for you.)
Hope this helps

In a junkyard about an hour from me sits a Wag Limited that had the 3rd seat option. All that's left are the brackets at the rear and the seatbelts.
The brackets look suspiciously like the front 2nd seat brackets. They just go down through the floor. I wonder if Jeep just used a 2nd seat turned rearward? Of course there isn't much legroom, but this isn't for real people. Just children and mothers-in-law.
Oh, I think there's a catch on the tire well for the seat to grab on, also.

I got a fold and tumble CJ (or YJ) rear seat for my GW, with the floor brackets. I'm going to mount it facing backwards, offset all the way to one side (it's about 6"-8" narrower than the space between the wheelwells), use one of the side-catches bolted to the one wheelwell, and attach seatbelts to the original seatbelt anchor points.
This will give me room for two more people in the back, bringing total carrying capacity up to 7 (I have a center console up front now with A/C ducts for the rear seat). It would also work facing forward, but the passenger's heads would be in danger of banging into the rear glass, so I'd only do that if I could install some headrests as well.
With the fold-n-tumble seat, I can fold it down to fit under the cargo-cover, or slide out two hitch-pins and remove it entirely.
The only additional mod I would consider would be an additional inside switch for rolling down the rear glass; for that I'd have to completely reconfigure the controls for the rear glass, but it would be worth it.

Bob, Shadowfax has a switch mounted inside his rear driver's side door for the rear window. I think he just bypassed the key switch and ran those wires to a three-position toggle. It's a neat install and works great. It looks like you could keep the key switch and just run jumpers to the three-pos and keep functionality on all three switches.

The second row seat in a Mazda MPV (sorta minivan) would probably be a good fit since it allows access to the 3rd row. It would probably be more comfortable than a SWB rear seat also.

Why not a couple front bucket seats from a sport's car or luxury car? Whack the brackets off the bottom of them and they sit pretty low, then make a little frame to attach them to with an arm-rest in between....

How 'bout pulling the bench (or bucket seats from the front) putting it in the back, and get some softy seats (Lincoln Towncar from a junkyard)? My bench seems to be the same width as the back seat.
Definitely interested on how you accomplish this job. Let us know!

If I recall, the volvo rear-facing seats are much taller than CJ-7 rear seats, so your head can rest against it. I imagine it would be pretty bad if you got in a collision and the rear passenger's heads snapped backwards.
