My J20 runs like crap when cold. Backfires out the exhaust, doesn't seem to be hitting on all eight, exhaust has heavy gasoline smell. Choke seems to be working, all vacumn lines new, timing right on, used the "rule of thumb" mixture adjustment, (1 and 1/2 turns out, now set at 1 turn out) EGR new. Once she warms up she smooth out nicely. What am I missing? Thanks

My bet's a bad power valve. Does your gas mileage stink, too?

I put in a new power valve about two years ago. Gas mileage always stinks.

have you checked the routing of the vac lines? maybe a cto isn/t operating and switching vac from ported to manifold or vice versa? probably too much choke though.

Well, there are not too many things that change when you get warmed up, so..

Choke, may be working too good, you could try adjusting it for a little less choke when cold.

CTOs, one may be stuck in the warm position, although the only ones that I can think would affect your situation are the ones going to the NLVR/distributor.

Thermal switches, there are a couple in the air cleaner, but they control the snorkel dampers and should effect mixture.
