greetings to all from new member !!!!!!! I am currently perplexed. i have a 90 grand wag with a 727 which is eating crankshafts. i have been told that the torque converter is BALLOONING!?!? and is the cause of my misery and general bane of my existance. SO ! I must replace said unit and rebuild transmission . HOWEVER!!!! I have bw t18 which is currently not in use along with various sundries and accoutrements to put into the WAG. QUESTION???!!!! is the crankshaft on my 360 engyne drilled to accept pilot Bushing /input shaft of manual transmission ?????? only thin i lack is a flywheel . any suggestions ???

yes it is -all you need is a clutch kit and a flywheel- but you might also have to modify the driveshafts and I have no idea what x-fer your gonna run so you might have some issues there also

The crank will accept the pilot bushing. I swapped from a TH400 to T18 last year, no problems.

Thank you gennelmuns,i figure to run the np 229 thats in there OAL of 727/229 combo in there is same as t18/208 combo i have t18/208 are married up with an adaptor from advance adaptors they appear to mate up the same way. If not i will have to commit some mechanical incest. but then again its a jeep. didnt want to have to grunt sweat and curse in vain thanks again

Would be easier to find a mid-70's Cherokee with the T18, with the body all rusted and put your 90 GW on the frame. No, mine's not for sale.
this torque converter balloning is very odd,how come now and never in a chevy or ford auto ,i have read the many posts about this
but seems odd many people have been having this trouble

Could balloning have anything to do with stall speed and the 2.73 axle? The GW's must be running close to stall speed most of the time. Could that build up heat?

I've read a couple of posts on this and I'm not convinced it's anything other then an excuse for some other screw up :rolleyes: I never had such a problem with my '75, '80, or '81 Cherokees and none of the people I've known personally had such a problem either.
I have read, however, of quite a few shops working on (screwing with) Jeeps that shouldn't be allowed to use tools that require calculations or any thought prior to use. ;)
When you pull your engine check the back of the crank and see if the install mechanic left a TH400 crank bushing in the end of the crank... because those don't work with the 727 and may lead to such "crank failure". I'm no auto guru, so don't take my word for it... but I think if you have been having repeated crank problems with the same excuse given from the same mechanics I'd be looking elsewhere for help. ;)

ONCE AGAIN THANKYOU for all your input, this engine just came back from the rebuilder originally for a wiped thrust surface. went through an entire high quality rebuild at a reputable shop.then it went to an installer, subcontracted by the rebuilder. the installer A MOPAR GUY. speaks the english language in complete sentences, and has two eyes that point in the same direction, swore that the transmisission was up to snuff and that he had never seen a 727 wipe out a thust surface. when the tell tale clickety clack of torque converter bolts on ispection plate came back,I returned to said installer who now tells me its a bad transmission. HMMMMMMMMM. I resisted the temptation not to beat him with a tire iron, and took the beast home to study options . and here i am thanks .
