In my 85 wag I have the little switch the goes from 2 to 4 wheel. When I use the switch I hear air coming from the front like it is doing its job. Is there a way to make sure that it is not stuck in 4? An easy way? Also is it best to switch in park? I have never really heard how I should switch. Can someone please help me out with that. Also, is there anything I need to do to get it out of four? All this is in 4 high. I have not put it in 4 low yet.

Ive heard you can roll while switching but I always come to a dead stop but keep it in "D"rive. There is no concrete way that I know of to be sure you arent always in 4hi but when I switch back to 2hi, I can hear the hiss of the vacuum letting go. If you have some mud around, gun it and look out the window to see a front tire spinning or have a spotter look. It works with snow also but Im guessing Alabama doesnt have any snow about now.

Well you are right about the snow. I will keep in mind that I can switch in D, I have been putting it in park.
Thanks. I am sure I can find some mud

if you cant shift into low range, then you arent in 4wheel. if you arent in 4 wd,you are in 2wheel. thats the test. with the 229 t/c being in 4wd is no big deal. not being able to get into 4wd is another story.

One problem with the "looking out the window" method is that you sometimes end up with a face full of mud. By all means, find some mud and try that puppy out. Try low range also, big mud holes, get it real dirty and drive home with an ear to ear, face splitting smile. :D
BTW, the 229 should be able to shift between 4h and 2h and street speeds.
