Hey guys,
Does anybody have the length of the linkage that goes from the end of the flag shifter formerly used with a 229, in order to mate it to a 208?
Been playing with all sorts of lengths, but for some reason I'm still getting partial front axle engagement when I think I'm in 2-H (flag all the way up).
I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I have searched and can't find the answer. The other problem I'm having, is that when in 2-H, the flag is pinched between my front seat and the base of the armrest; and when it's in 4-L it's gotta be under the floor mat to engage.
All measurements, pictures, suggestions, ridicule, etc. appreciated.

Are you using the bell crank assembly or to you have it hooked directly from the shift lever to the transfer case?

when I swapped in my 208, I used the "lower" portion of the shift linkage (NP229) and upper portion from the NP 208 to get the right length and pattern. I seperated them linkages at the plastic ball bearing. Hope this helps.

This is a 208 and its linkage. The shift patern is 4H 2H N 4L . The link i think you needed the length is about 10 1/4". Hope this helps.

David, I've got it hooked directly from the end of the shift lever to an adjustable rod about 7 inches long, and then to the 2-1/2" flat piece on the transfer case. It makes the travel of the 229 flag shifter too long, and the travel of the flat piece too short (I think), to make all the engagements.
Damon, Thanks for the pictures! Is this of the 208 with it's linkage as it mated to the 229 flag? Also, if it's not too much trouble, how long is the short shaft and the two flat pieces?
Bowtieman55, you wouldn't happen to have some pictures would you?
Thanks guys! I'm scrambling to get this thing squared away before Friday. I've got a trail ride scheduled for Saturday!

yer welcome, the short shaft is adjustable and is at 5 1/16" at center's
flat two rods are on is 4 1/4" little less:D trying to eye ball centers
flat on T/C is 2"
This was hooked to a 208 flag now that i think of it. he asked me if i wanted the shifter an i thought it was 228...oops. i don't know if the 229 and 208 flags are the same on other side of the bearing where it goes thru the floor. the handle showed the shift pattern though:o hope they are the same otherwise. sounds like you need the long rod from the 208. post of yer success. you could just put it in 4L and unlock the hubs to get to the trail:thumbsup:
:drivin: hope yer wheelin trip is

Thanks Damon! I'll try to get some pictures tonight when I dive into it! Worst case, if I can't get it hooked up right in time for this weekend, I'll just do a gravel-back shift into 4-lo at the trail...(laying in the gravel on my back!)

Hey Damon,
I put Chuckwag on jackstands tonight, pulled the front shaft, and removed the linkage to test each shift position. The linkage ain't the problem, because it works fine. With the linkage on or off, it fully engages both output shafts in 4-lo and 4-hi, but in neutral and 2-hi, the front output shaft still turns just a little and clunks inside the case as if it is not fully disengaged. The shift lever on the case is all the way back, but it's just not fully disengaging the front output.
At this point I'm thinking something must be wrong inside the t-case. Is there any internal adjustment that might correct this? The only other thing I can think of is to re-check the connection of the rear flat bracket that is attached to the case shift shaft...everything else seems correct based on all the feedback.
Guys, I really appreciate all your help on this. I'm pretty sure by now that all of you are sick and tired of hearing about all these little issues with getting Chuckwag back on the road. I think the Jeep gods are punishing me for making him sit in my shop for the last year! :D
More ideas appreciated! This weekend's trail ride seems in peril!

Thanks Damon,
I'm gonna hit the trails anyway, assuming I can get everything back together today.
I think there's a xfer rebuild in my future, so as long as I can get it to engage properly in 4-lo and 4-hi, I'm outa here!
Thanks for the links, and the help!
