Well i started the build on my 82 cherokee the other day and it started with a good cleaning! now the rear window was messed up and it wouldn't go down for me to open the tailgate and there was so much junk and trash in this thing that i had to clean it out to get to the tailgate to work on the window. well in my clean up i had climbed into the back of the Jeep and was throwing trash out when i picked up a big bunch of leaves to discover the copperhead underneath... now im in the back of the jeep with a rather large copperhead who has made my jeep his winter home and now he is between me and the exit and boy was he mad!!! snakes don't really bother me but this one was mad! and me and him were together in a tight space. so i moved faster than i ever have over the rear seat and out the door, I grabbed a shovel and me and the snake went to battle!!! after the snake was removed i went back to cleaning only this time with a little caution.
anybody else ever find critters and stuff in a new project?

I had a raccoon take up residence on top of the engine of a waggy I had sitting out back last winter...and that fat SOB was NOT interested in coming out of there in February when I went to steal some parts off of it...but when I finally got him off there he was NOT AT ALL happy with me...ran me up onto the hood of another car...
If I could have videotaped that deal I'd have had 10,000 to put into my hobby...:o

In the 66 project, I could hear some rustling overheard.... I had noticed the droppings before and plugged all the holes (A/C) but the mice had built a nice nest on the headliner.... by the TOP of the A pillar.... Gone the nice headliner. Pine sol seems like a good deterent, I leave 3 bottles without the caps, no visitors for the last year. I still have no idea about the entry way, there must be a big rust hole in the quarter panel area.
The snake is the winner.

I had a junk CJ out back of my garage that I was using as a bits & pieces donor for a rebuild I was doing. I headed out to rob something long since forgotten out of the engine bay. It had a 258 in it and the exhaust pipe had been disconnected right at the manifold. I was bent way over the fender trying to wrench on whatever it was I trying to rob off of it, with my face about 6 inches or so from the flared end of the disconnected exhaust, when my wrench slipped and banged the pipe.
This freakin snake came shooting up out of the pipe and dang near poked me between the eyes. I musta bounced my head off the bottom of the hood about 3 times before I had sense enough to back out from underneath. From my front row seat it looked big enough to swallow an alligator, but while large for its kind it was just your basic garden snake.
Had to go change my shorts regardless....

Field mice packed the intake of one of my Jeeps with acorns and pecans once, but snakes????
OH YEAH! had squirrels in the attic and lots of field mice in my country property when I came back from overseas. (They WILL find a way)
Went out and bought one of those nifty 'ultrasonic rodent get ridder of-er thingy'. Hooked it up and turned it on. Left it for the weekend while I went to Wichita Falls, TX to take care of some business. Came back and didn't have a squirrel or mouse one in the house or the attic. I DID have a snake under the kitchen sink, one in the broom closet, one in the commode and another in the bath tub. Just for good measure, I checked the rest of the house and found one curled up on the back porch and two under the porch.
Didn't have any squirrels or mice though so I guess the 'ultrasonic rodent get ridder of-er thingy' worked....................:D

I had a cluster of Black Widows under mine... after the gut wrenching cramps from the poison went away I dumped a couple cans of raid under the Waggy. Apparently Black Widow bites don't kill you, just make you wish you were dead.

I know I could have won some money if someone had video taped the incident. I'v caught many snakes with just my hands even a couple copperheads (yes i know im an idiot) but when you get a surprise visit from one inside of a vehicle its a little different.

A buyer came by to look at my cornbinder truck. He poked around and discovered the massive yellowjacket colony in one of the stake holes. Both of us did a max-G 0-60.
He wants the truck anyway.
Glad the weather is now getting colder, and thus these little bahstids will become dormant; he's due to have the cash scraped together, and I need to finish clearing the truck of my belongings.
But snakes--and copperhead at that! :omfg: Holy moly! I'd have needed that shovel to clean up after myself.

Got rid of the angry opposum I found sleeping on my shelf in the garage. I was looking for parts, getting around all my wifes crap she still has not gone through, moved a box and there he was sleeping on a shelf. Grabbed an old shower curtain rod slipped a rope through and had an instant cinch. He was laying there playing possum until I laid that rope across him. He came alive and I cinched up quick and had him in the air at the end of that pole. He was all teeth and claws but his tail was the worse. I was carring him and he had hold of a vacuum cleaner. I was carrying him and the vacuum cleaner through the garage. He decided to let go when he could not breath. Let him go outside to live another day.

Yea,
I don't know why that won't come up on a search but it was around the same time I was dealing with a rattler in NM. Odd I can't find it, that was some scary pic's from my POV.

Charlie,
I remember well. It was about a 4 1/2 foot rattler that had coiled up on top of the air breather. This was on the 83 WT Cherk I was getting from Pascal. 6 months after he'd brought the rig up here, anytime I'd open the hood, I couldn't help but jump back thinking another one was in there.

I had a pretty good hornets nest under the YJ hardtop this year after letting it sit outside. Glad I found it before I tried picking up the top to reinstall.
My wife also found a drunk guy passed out in my Cherokee. Luckily, it was just me!

OH GAWD!!! I HATE SNAKES!!!!! WEll...had to look at this post anyways.
A year or so back I brought home a 84 Fiero...while underneath it to unbolt the drain plug (You know how low these things are without jacking them up)...a big snake came down off the block across my chest and out the way I wanted to take my screaming body...gives me the jitters to think about it..and that wasn't the end of it, I figure oh...I scared it off...right? Well while up topside (rear mounted motor) I was reaching down to unscrew the oil filter..and turned sideways and looking right at me was the same dang snake. I took a picture..and we killed it. But it was apparently just a garden snake, all the same...I HATE THEM...and everytime I get into a rig that I know has bad floor pans, or open a hood I'm screaming inside....

When I bought my first wag several years back, there were 3+ yellow jacket nest in/on the jeep. We made an attempt to kill them all before driving it home. The guy I bought it from had his wife go to the store and got us 4 can's of starter fluid to arm us for our drive home. No one got stung but we had 2 entpy cans of starter fluid when got home (15 min drive tops).

Oh Yeah, same place in North Texas, the guy who owned the vacant acreage next to me went out to start his old 'new' tractor one day. Had to cut the weeds 'doncha know', It had been really hot so he was going to make sure all was well with the tractor. Lifted that itty bitty hood on the tractor and almost had a heart attack. On top of the engine was a 6' rattle snake. Dead of course from the heat, but still enough to give the old guy a case of nitro in the shorts.
Felt sorry for him............... No I didn't, he was a bit loose upstairs.

Great thread. I'm pretty sure if I was in the truck and came across a copperhead in close quarters like that, there'd suddenly be another mess to clean out of the truck.
I just have spider problems. Got in the truck the other day, backed out of the garage, only to see that my entire instrument panel was covered in a giant assed web. Never did find the spider.

Worst thing I ever had to remove from a vehicle is a redneck previous owner.
Snakes I would welcome.......spiders on the other hand......I would consider the vehicle a total loss. :(

I was pulling the tranny out of my parts Jeep when I look up and a black widows was about 3 inches from my face. I bought some bug bombs and put them under the jeep. Worked great.
I've also had the mice in the head liner problem.

When I bought my first 78 Cherokee the owner told me I would have to take his Junkyard dog for a ride too..... I was not understanding ...
Apparently his junkyard dog (pitbull) did not want me to take possession of his long and trusty home. Well I test drove the darn thing with the pit still in the back. Drove for 25 minutes and did not as much as stir him or get him aroused.
Well I had to come back in 2 days to pick up the jeep because thats how long it took the ol' pitbull to decided he was hungry enough to leave.
It was the weirdest test drive I've ever had.

This guy was in the door hinge area of my Jeep. Knocked out him out and he fell and just sat there looking at me. Has a real nice pattern on him, it's a Pygmy Rattler. We have thousands of these around here. They are funny to watch because if you tap them with a stick, they stiffen up and raise their heads into an "s" shape and show you their "fake eyes" on their backs.

I saw one of the biggest rattlesnakes I have ever seen in my life in the scrap yard last year beside a willys wagon laying on some old clay jugs. I took a picture of it but I will have to find it.
Edi: I found the picture of it. It was a colder fall day and I think he was getting as much sun as he could. The cold weather was probably the only reason I didn't get bitten.

Is FSJ the acroymn for Mice Motel 6? Every Jeep I've owned has had mice in the headliner. The last batch was in my J20 plow truck. After pulling the seats, headliner and carpet, I power washed the entire inside. Must of dry heeved at least 50 times.
If only moth balls smelled better.
But I'll take the mice over the copperhead any day.

I have learned over the years, that having cats around the parts rigs keeps the rodents away. The only problem is they wont kill the Centipedes or the Scorpions. Had a neighbor tear down an old mobile home this summer and my yard got infested with them. Brake Kleen REALLY messes them up.......

The only thing I've encountered are Red Wasp. I bought a 84 parts Wag that seemed more like an apartment complex for them. We bought a couple cans of bug foggers and a large tarp. Next we covered the Jeep with the tarp and set the foggers off inside and under the Jeep. The total death toll was well over 100 when all was said and done.

No snakes to worry about here in Alaska... Unless you count the snowshoe rattler! :D
I did manage to get myself between a moma Moose and her two babies last spring while pulling parts from one of my parts cars. They were bedded down between them and I nearly steped on them comming around the corner of the car. Mom bolted up and chased me around the cars about a 1/2 dozen times. It was an AMC project and i took refuage in a Pacer of all things. Moma stomped and snorted around that stupid little car for a good 15 minutes before she took her babies some place else. Never realized just how small an AMC Pacer was until I was trying to stare down an 1800 lb moose from the back seat...
