That axle is little more than scrap metal IMO. They use a slightly different carrier so you can't get lockers in them. Find a non vacuum axle from 80-91. I think they only did those vacuum axles for about 3-4 years as an option.

a 44 front out of an older f150 would be a better one to use in a xj its easier to set up as well. check out 4wd fourms and search it on there i know there were several guys on there that have done that. heres the link to the page.

There is nothing wrong with that axle. It uses the same carrier as a non-vacuum disconnect Dana 44. I put a plane ol' Dana 44 Track-lok carrier in mine, all I had to do was grind some of the left axle gear to allow for the stub shaft cir clip and you probably don't need it. You can also replace the drivers side two piece axle with a one piece shaft form a narrow track Cherokee or Wag.

The stub shaft and shift collar are very stout. So I wouldn't worry about breaking them. If you take the cover off, you will see how to lock the shift fork in place to keep the collar engaged, with the help of some old posts.

They were only made for '83/'84.

If your not going bigger than 38's I would run some beefy shafts in the 30 allready in the xj. If your going 44 NT front and rear Then I would find another axle. The early xj's had the same problem.

If you were in the "axle section" that was most likely the tech archives and not an open forum.
