Well I finally figured out what was causing my truck to overheat at hig speeds. The thermostsat was stuck half open/half closed. Put a new one in and bam, it stays nice and cool goign down the highway at 65mph and 95 degrees. Now I feel better, because this is the motor in my 83 Limited which will be going into my newly aquired 86 GW. Thanks for the help everybody.

Congrats!
hate those pesky thermostats. They are so hit and miss, even when you boil 'em

I would imagine it's not to good for the engine in colder climates where it might never warm up. It really hot weather I don't think it matters a great deal. But I'm just guessing.

i aint never run a thermostat during the summer in anything.
Been running sans thermostat now for about a year...it is great in the summer, but sucks in the winter...takes forever to heat up...I'll be installing one in a couple o months when it starts cooling offf...

in theory... the thermostat is supposed to help cool the motor also - slows the flow down to the proper speed, allowing the water in the motor to absorb the heat... ?
Meanwhile, with a new thermostat, my GW still runs hot.

Manhattan, have you tried any of the water wetter type products? I saw some stuff at advance that was supposed to drop running temps20-40 degrees depending on the mix, the guy at the counter said some customers had tried it and were well pleased with it . considering it for my motorhome if/when I get back to working on it.
