Well fellas, the Chief oughtta be ready within the next 6 weeks or so, BJs says the lift and bumper should be deployed by now, the electrical work is coming to an end, new tires are ready and waiting and paint shop has been tentatively lined up for about 3 weeks from now.

Now, it also recently occured to me that I really dont like the original red, crushed velour seats Ive got up front. Dont get me wrong, theyre actually in terrific shape, no stains, no burn holes, not to shabby all in all.

Just uncomortable for me, I dont find I've got much forward or back "lean" out of them', theyre sorta mushy and I end up feeling like Im sitting sorta low in the saddle.

Anybody got an suggestions/recommendations from what theyve swapped into their rides?

Ive been searching local Craigslists for damaged/salvage cars that I can pull seats out of, and know I like the recent Ford Explorer, GMC Silverado and (yes) even seats out of a Volvo I sat in recently.

Suggestions for what worked for you?

Thanks as always fellas,

Chuck Brown

You can put a lot of different seats in them. Somebody on here even has some Eddie Bauer Expedition seats in his. They look real nice. I have some seats out of a Tracer and they work fine for me. You can also get new seats for a CJ or something like that and get them to work pretty easily.

The big issue I struggled with -

Most seats and tracks are too high, resulting in your head hitting the roof.

And, the pass side tunnel on my 79 is WIDE to the pass side. This caused a lot of issues trying to mount a different seat track there.

Might want to think about finding a seat that will fit the stock seat track without being too high. At least then you can use the stock mounting holes.

Do a search on seats replacement, there's info on here..

Good luck.

I'm pretty happy with my S10 seats for long trips but they are not real snug for off-camber stuff.
I'm going to switch to Altima seats.
Both require fab work to get them in on the floor like mentioned above by cu4whln.
I never had stock brackets for buckets, but it's not that hard.
I did try '85 GW seats, sort of the feel you mentioned above, those went away after the first road trip.

Tad, did you ever get the Altima seats installed and how do you like them?

I have Bestop Trailmax low backs. They fit pretty well and look like they belong there.

I wouldn't mind sitting too high, it's the steering wheel that gets in the way for mine!

I still haven't perfected the seats I'm attempting to mount....slow build! I am using a gmc safari/chevy astro van rear...got the idea from a member on here. It's about 2" narrower overall, maybe 1 1/4, but otherwise, with the right bracketry...new and comfortable...and it was FREE. The guy actually made me take two of them to get the one free.

I'd avoid ANYTHING Rugged Ridge/Omix since everything online about them is negative based on quality & customer service.

Their prices are always too good, but everyone I know that has bought anything from them because of the low price always feels ripped off after.

I went on there site and they had adapters for a 75 j10. But no other j series.

Shouldn't a adapter for a 75 j10 work on say a 77 j20? The stock bench is a real pain in the butt, literally.

Anyone have any experience with those guys?

If money was not a problem and you want some nice leather seats. I'm partial to Ford King Ranch seats, but they go for major bucks on ebay.

For half or less of what they go for, you can get brand new custom Katskins from BJ's. Right now I plan to save up and probably go with Katskins.
