The Dauntless Buick 350 V8, thumbs up or thumbs down? The reason i ask is because it's in a FSJ.."super" Wagoneer that i want to buy. Is it a much better engine than the 360? Does it have more hp..what is the hp about? THX It's a neat looking Jeep.

The Buick 350 is a great motor. Even better, its easy to swap in a Buick 455 ... a true power house. I've never had a FSJ with the Dauntless, but I used to have a Buick Sun Coupe. I bought it with the 350 and replaced it with a 455 (tuned with the Stage I cam no less). The Stage I 455 was rated at 510 lb-ft of torque from the factory ... excellent for 4WD duty.
I won't rag the AMC 360, but the later versions like my 83 seem pretty gutless from the factory. To be fair though, smog regulations had beat down most V8's by the early 80's.

Its a really good motor, cool thing about them is you dont see a FSJ with one everyday like you do the 360. I personaly think the quality is about the same though.

360 has a bit more torque then the buick 350, but the buick engine will last longer. Unless the 360 has the oiling mods and such, then longevity should be similar.

I met a guy with a Buick the other day, andhe said his 350 has a lot more off the line than the old 360 he had, and that the 350 had more top end. But it is hard to compare two engines. GET IT!

The Buick is a good engine, the AMC 360 is a good engine, either one could
beat the other in terms of power depending on the state of tune of each.
I don't think one would out last the other given both were fed and taken care
of, the amc needs clean oil to keep the pump housing from being scored, on the
oiling mod personally I don't see the advantage in a low rev, street motor where
the bearing clearances are tight and oil presure is not a issue. The rear main/rods
fail first but from what I have seen this is on engines where oil presure was low
before the bearing failure.

I agree Mike, I wish people would stop knocking AMC motors with this redkneck chevy thing. AMCs are good motors...
