I just wanted to throw that out there. I mean it may sound shallow, but I've always wanted a vehicle that people noticed, and this old wagoneer definately gets peoples attention. Even people that don't know Jeeps and really don't know what it is still kind of look.

This evening at the gas station on the way home from work a guy asked me about it. He asked "how much did you give for it, 5, 6?" when I told him 3 he told me I got a steal.

You don't see a lot of these around here period. Maybe that has to do with there high show room price. Let alone anyone who drives one daily.

Well, with gas prices being what they are I'm going to continue to enjoy driving it as often as possible :) . Oh well, just rambling off the top of my head :D .

Later, York.

Mine is a weekend driver which makes me appreciate it that much more. I get so that I can't wait until the weekend, just to drive it!

I agree with you on all accounts. No one, I mean no one has one in my town or in the local region either. I occasionally pass a little blonde driving a black late model on the way home from Ithaca, NY and there's a guy who has a white one up on blocks in the hill country. Other than that, I'm it. And... it is cool. It's a head turner no matter which side of the fence you're on. With so much "old school" references out there, this is the real deal. The best part of it is they come pretty cheaply for the most part although I probably spent about $3K too much for mine :o

Having owned my Wag since April, to this day just about every time I fill up (and that's quite alot) someone engages me in a conversation about it. Depends on where you are though. If you're in foo foo land like in parts of NJ where my sister in law lives (I'm qualified to call it that because I used to live there), you're looked at like you've got three heads since you're gassing up next to a brandy new hummer or Escalade or Nav or something. I have the last laugh though when I look at my car payment knowing that if I really want to, I have the option of paying it off without completely strapping myself.

I also have people ask me about the poor gas mileage. I really poo hoo it. #1, compared to modern SUV's it's close at 14 mpg, #2 at least for me, for the price we pay for these rigs along with the gas, you'd be pretty hard preseed to spend as much as someone else who bought a new $30 or $40K vehicle over the lifetime of the truck, #3, it's my weekend get around so, get a grip! #4 the people who ask me about poor gas mileage in Ithaca, NY are really hinting that I'm killing the planet as they drive around in their non-catalytic 1978 Volvo's. Yah that makes sense...

More times than not, I have these eureka moments where I'm by myself, enjoying the drive and I'll say, "gawd this is great!"

Keep on luvin' it. That's what they were built for! :drivin::fsj:

I just got my Diesel Wagoneer running. It's so much more fun to drive than my VW Jetta that there's really no comparison. I love my Jeeps.

A couple summers ago I was coming back home from visiting a friend in the hospital and got stopped at a DUI checkpoint. The cop asked if I'd been drinking, and I explained about the hospital. He leaned back and looked left and right down the side of the Jeep, and said, "We had one of these when I was a kid. Have a nice evening!" Off I went.

I got mine a few months ago and when I had it out in front of my house people would stop the car and check it out, or drive right around the block to get a second look. Now I just have to work on getting it all back together and get it on the road (maybe off road would be the better word;) ):fsj:

Speaking of foo foo, I should have mentioned this before.

We live in an older section of town with some victorian houses smattered here and there. Next door is an old place that the owners fixed up into a bed and breakfast. We get a lot of NYC and NJ people who stay there, especially on race weekends.

Anyway, I was walking the dog one morning and the Wag was parked in our driveway. I had kind of put is out of my mind that I left it outside overnight because it's usually garaged. So I pass the B&B and there's this guy standing in the parking area looking over our hedge toward the house. He stood there for about 5 seconds, went back to packing up his new Grand Cherokee and kept glancing back toward the house. I finally had a hit the coconut moment and realized that he was looking at the Wag. When I went back into the house a few minutes later and came out to do some work, the guy made it a point to pass our house on the way out (a real inconvenience exiting the B&B), slow down and take a final look. Pretty neat!

I've had that with my 1948 FarmallCub tractor too where people walk into our yard and ask me questions about it.

I had a similar experience recently. I have a 79 cherokee that I'm restoring. I took it to the exhaust shop to have some work done and they guy there was in love. Mind you it's all sanded awaiting paint, has no glass in it except the windshield, no interior except for the driver's seat, and no dash in it. Still he couldn't believe what good shape it was in for an Ohio Jeep.

After leaving there I drove it home with open headers and stopped for gas. I had a couple of old timers walk over and check it out. They too were inpressed with how well it has held up...even though it's barely assembled. :)

Do you ever find yourself forgetting that you're driving something interesting?

Every once in a while when driving my Grand Wagoneer or my J200, I'll be in town or something and somebody on the side of the road will stare at me as I go by, and I think, "What the ____ are you looking at?"

Oh yeah, I forgot!

Hi. My name is Scott...and I love my Jeep.

I was 5 years old (1974) when I saw my first Wagoneer that I remember. I had seen the TV show Daktari and was somewhat familiar with the Jeep Trucks. My parents said that the conversation went something like this.
Me - "Dad, what is that truck"
Dad - "That's a Wagoneer"
Me - "Can we get one!!!"
Dad - "No, we don't need one of those"
Flash forward 8 years and my parents decided to buy a CJ7 which is what really cemented me as a Jeep owner. I took that thing with me when I moved out and owned it for 9 years until someone stole it, never to be recovered.
All was not lost though as I had purchased an abused 1974 (strange that the year of first wanting and the production years lined up) J10 that was behind a body shop. I could now justifiably transfer intended funds to the J10.
Well, 10 years and $5K and it still has not moved more than 200 miles under its own power. When I came back from overseas I bought my daily driver a 88 GW that is really a great ride. My wife still cannot understand my attraction but it goes back to my childhood dreams.
When considering the cost of owning an older vehicle compared to a new $35K vehicle. I considered the more frequent fueling, yearly maintenance, and engine/transmission replacements. With the spares in my parents barn, I get to 27 years before I reach the breakover point. Given the additonal fact that I truly enjoy the wrenching, it just makes sense to stay with what I go.

I just sold my 97 Jeep Wrangler. My family is getting larger we just had a new boy. My Wrangler was a 2 seater by choice and I couldn't take both boys with me if I were to enjoy the trails. So time for a new Jeep. I found a 91 Grand Wangoneer and had to have it. I love the workmanship and the tried and true 4x4 of FSJ. Now all of us can travel in her on weekends, take trips in her and go to tailgate parties. She is the envy of all my buddies.:fsj::drivin:

Yes that is the Jeep on my sig, and hopefuly I will get more pics of it soon. Originaly when I saw it I didn't like the wood paneling and niether did my wife, but it is really starting to grow on us.

As for why I'm hooked on Jeeps, unfortunately has nothing to do with my dad. He is a Ford man, and as long as it still cranks every time that he sits down in the seat he doesn't care what it looks like, how it runs, or whats in it as long as it gets him there. When I originally took over his 89 F150, ex cab, 2wd, with 300-6, and 5 speed in high shcool it had 150k+ miles on it, and the original plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. But, that is a story for another time. Needless to say he hates working on them, and doesn't maintain them. (I'm ranting, sorry.)

Anyway the reason that I bought my first Jeep was really because of my moronic brother-in-law. He is the type of guy that could tear up an anvil with a feather. You don't loan him your stuff, and his idea of driving in mud is diving off in the hole at lightning speed and bouncing the engine off the rev-limiter until he is either stuck beyond belief or out the other side. He went through more vehicles, in the first three years that I knew him, than you could shake a stick at. He finally landed in a 4wd 1996 XJ Cherokee. He drove it the same as he did any of the others, and it had 120k miles on it when he got it. It was his main mode of transportation for 4 years until he finally blew up the motor with 250+ on the ticker. I think he replaced the water pump once and never maintained it.

That impressed me so much that when I ran across my 89 XJ I had to get it. I'd still be driving it today if that idiot woman hadn't pulled out in front of me. (Lord forgive me for calling names, she didn't do it on purpose, but I loved that old Jeep and man did the insurance company screw me when they wrote me the check for it. :( )

My dad told me when I bought it, "boy you don't need a four wheel drive, why on earth would you buy a Jeep." The reason that he hasn't said anything about this one is that later that year we loaded a 3/4 ton pickup bed trailer full to overflowing with fire wood, and when the old Heep walked up out of the bottom with it (clawing its way steadly, in mud up to the center caps), he said " hey thats kind of nice to have." :). Since that time I've pulled his tractors and pickup out countless times and I actually think he's contemplating a 4wd F150 for his next truck. Maybe one day I'll get him to buy a Jeep. :)

P.s. Sorry for the novel, and I love the ink. I'm glad I'm not the only person that has thought of that. Later, York.

Don't worry about the novel. If someone doesn't want to read it they don't have to.. I on the other hand usually do read them. I get long winded on here from time to time.

Some of these guys have some cool Jeep Ink. There is a thread somewhere that has some pics in it.

remember, just because they're looking at your rig, doesn't mean they're appreciating it!!

grand wagoneers are very rare in australia - about 25 or so were imported by jeep australia a year before they ceased operations here (for the time being).

prior to that there were limiteds & wagoneers imported over the years too but i would imagine they came in very small numbers.

i originally had a model-18 4 door cherokee - a very prevalent model in australia at its time & a lot were assembled here too - but i always wanted the wagoneer. it does get a lot of admiration but i'm sure some are smirking too....

the other day, driving home, a guy in the latest mercedes 4wd slowed down whilst passing to yell out how "awesome" the truck looked... she's not showroom by any means, but tidy (see august in the 08 calendar)... & that was reaffirmation right there.... not that i (or we at ifsja) needed any.

happy to be a part of the international sj jeep appreciation society.

Yeah, I've written about this a couple of times...

I had the Jeep for about a month and was really getting used to it. The sun was shining on a great blue sky late spring day. I had the roof open, the tunes blaring and all of the windows down. Up comes this rice burner full of college kids and I'm literally bracing for the verbal assault or some kind of high pitched roar as they race by. Instead, this kids shows me the three fingered rock and roll sign and yells, "dude, your truck rocks!" Still laugh about that one. :D

I'm at an auction a few months ago...I see this nice looking 20-something girl, and naturally I take in an eyeful. She sees me looking, makes eye contact and grins a little, as in 'yeah, I know I'm hot'......and I figure that's the end of that...

So I'm loading the Gladiator up with some stuff I buy about 3 hours later and she walks up, looks at me and says 'that is one WICKED truck'...winks and walks off...

I LOVE my truck!!!

i get that too, but it's the guys in the TJ's and JK's that are behind me, and see the big letters on the tailgate...can almost read it on their faces, "that's a Jeep?"

Perverts. :) Nah just kidding.

That would be a great sales ploy though . FSJs = cute girls. hmmmmm..... My wife would kill me!!!!

Seriously though I went playing at one of the old ore mines around here in my old XJ and it had just rained, and I got it so covered in mud that I couldn't hardly see out of the windshield! I stopped at the Sonic on my way to the car wash, and this convertible pulled up with these 4 cute girls in it. One of them looked over and said "hey, looks like you've been playing" and grinned. She asked "what color is that thing really?" I said "it's supposed to be red, see" and wiped some of the mud off with my finger. She laughed and said that it looked like fun. About that time my wife slapped me on the arm and told me to quit flurting. :)
